Renault India took a very bold step when it first introduced the Kwid hatchback in India, as it was placed in a segment completely dominated by the top two car makers in India – Maruti Suzuki with its Alto and Hyundai with its Eon. The comparatively lesser known Renault thus, made a bold decision in launching its representative in the entry level car segment of India, which comprises of the first time car buyers who prefer going for the most established mass market brands. However, the Kwid proved to be a true game changer for Renault in India, and also revolutionized the entry-level hatchback segment of India. The SUV-ish looks, good interior space and an array of features of the Renault Kwid actually increased the expectations of the Indian first time car buyers. Kwid showed that entry-level hatchbacks don’t have to be puny and bare basic and can look aggressive and attractive and offer a lot of goodies on the inside.
Renault India has already sold over 2.2 lakh units of the Kwid ever since its launch in India. Renault’s decision of the global launch of the Kwid was aimed at pursuing its strategy of offering accessible mobility to all, while also as a part of its global growth strategy.
The Renault Kwid range in the Indian car market comprises of the 0.8L, 1.0L MT, 1.0L AMT and Climber versions. Although the Renault Kwid continues to remain popular in India, it has been experiencing a dip in its sales rates lately. Thus, Renault is thus offering a lot of special edition models of the Kwid such as the recently launch Super Hero editions. Renault also plans to bring in a slew of other models based on the Kwid in India, while the Kwid’s electric version is also on cards for future, when Renault decides is the right time.
