MG recently announced that they are bringing a mid-size SUV to compete with the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. Now, we’ve reports that the carmaker is also working on bringing a sub-4m SUV to disrupt the dominance of Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Brezza and Kia Seltos.
MG India have confirmed that they are working hard to achieve full utilization of the current Halol plant. During this period, MG will work on a brand new, India-specific sub-4m SUV. So far, the MG cars in India are rebadges of cars in their parent company’s portfolio. However, the new sub-4m SUV will start from scratch and be made for India from the ground up.
With the help of this new SUV, MG are hoping to achieve sales of 2 lakh units per year from the three high-volume models - the Astor, Hector and compact SUV
This new compact SUV could use the new Sigma architecture as the Sigma is flexible enough to accommodate different sizes and body styles. The carmaker is also likely to venture into the MPV and premium hatchback segment using the same platform. The MPV is likely to arrive sooner as there’s less competition in that space. Compared to the hatchbacks, where Maruti and Hyundai have their turfs defined, Tata Altroz and Tiago are trying to make room for themselves. MG may have a tough time pushing all three heavyweights to make room for their own hatchback.
The new SUV could arrive in 2023 or 2024. Once it’s here, the MPV could land in 1 year after the SUV’s launch. The hatchback will take another year of development time before making it to the showroom floor.
