Wagon R has been one of the best sellers by Maruti Suzuki in the Indian market. Since the updated version of the hatchback is ready for launch this month, the details about the 2019 Wagon R has got leaked through the brochure ahead of launch. The car is scheduled to be launched on 23rd January 2019.
According to the leaked brochure, the 2019 Wagon R will be 3,655 mm long, 1,620 mm wide and 1,675 mm tall. This means that the next – gen model is 56 mm longer, 130 mm wider and 25 mm shorter compared to the outgoing version. Not only the dimension but the wheelbase of the hatchback has also been increased by 35 mm, now standing at 2,435 mm. Also, the car will be up to 65 kg lighter weighing around 805 kg for the base model.
Under the hood, the next- gen Wagon R gets the same 68 hp, 1.0- litre, three- cylinder engine (K10B) as the existing model, and will also be additionally offered with a new 83 hp, 1.2- litre, four- cylinder engine (K12M) borrowed from Maruti Suzuki’s bigger hatchbacks such as the Swift and Ignis. Both engines get 5- speed manual and automated manual transmission options, while a CNG option will also be on offer only on the K10B motor. The brochure reveals that the 2019 Wagon R will be offered in seven variants- LXi, VXi, VXi AGS, ZXi and ZXi AGS. A top- spec ZXi variant will replace the current top- spec VXi+ trim. The smaller motor will be available only in the lower- spec LXi and VXi trims, while the larger engine will be available with the mid-spec VXi and top- spec ZXi variants. The AMT will be offered with both engines, but only above the VXi trim.
The car has already been spied testing a number of times in the country. The leaked images show that the new model comes with signature Maruti's grille with Suzuki emblem at the centre and wraparound headlamps, chrome treatment on the grille looking similar to that of Ignis. The spotted model is the mid- spec variant, which misses out on fog lamps but accommodates newly designed fog lamp housing at the front. At the sides, the hatchback looks bigger than the outgoing model and hints towards more legroom space for rear occupants at the inside. Sharing resemblance with the Ertiga, the Wagon R will come with a floating roofline and creases to the front and rear fenders and doors. Large tail- lamps mounted high up the C- pillar at the rear completes the look of the upcoming Wagon R.
According to the leaked information, the interior of the top- spec variant will get Maruti’s SmartPlay 7.0- inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, while the mid- spec VXi will get a standard 2- DIN audio system with Bluetooth connectivity. The Japanese car maker has also made a number of equipments standard in order to meet the upcoming crash test norms. The features include ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, a seatbelt reminder for the driver and front passenger, driver- side airbag and a speed alert system. However, the passenger side airbag will be an optional extra on the LXi and VXi trims, while the top- spec ZXi will get dual front airbags as standard, along with seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters.
Currently, Maruti Suzuki sells the fourth generation Wagon R in the Indian market and didn’t launch the fifth gen model in the country. The reason behind the fifth gen Wagon R not launching in the country is because of the new Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program with stricter crash test regulations. The 2019 model will be the sixth gen Wagon R that will be on sale in India and will meet these new safety regulations.
The upcoming Wagon R will come with the option of six exterior color options– white, silver, grey, orange, brown and blue. The hatchback currently sells from Rs 4.15 lakh to Rs 5.39 lakh (ex- showroom, Delhi) and is likely to be priced starting at Rs 4.5 lakh and going up to Rs 6.5 lakh (ex- showroom). When launched, the next- gen Maruti Suzuki Wagon R will continue to take against the likes of the Tata Tiago, Renault Kwid and Hyundai Santro in the segment.
