    Revealed: New Toyota Corolla Sport To Draw Young Drivers

    Toyota Motors Corporation has revealed the Corolla sport- hatchback with a major makeover launching the car in Japan. Unveiled at the New York Auto show some time ago and one of the world’s best-selling cars, the new Toyota Corolla sports a sporty silhouette and new interactive functions in order to draw in younger buyers. Toyota Corolla was first launched in the year 1966 and 46 million units have seen new homes since then. The company refused to decide any targets for the car but said that the reliability of the Corolla would likely continue to draw in mature drivers.

    Talking about the new Corolla, Yoshiki Konishi, chief engineer of the Corolla Sport said, “We’re grateful that our older customers have remained loyal to the Corolla. But we want the Corolla to resonate more with younger drivers ... we want to target people in their 20s and 30s.”

    Under the hood, the newly launched Toyota Corolla sport is available with two engine options – a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol producing 114 hp and a 120 hp generating petrol-hybrid powertrain which is essentially the same as on the Toyota Prius. The engines come mated to a 10-step CVT for now, while a manual gearbox will be added later to the lower trims. Though, Toyota will also sell the higher-spec Corolla Sport with all-wheel drive, while the Toyota Corolla Sport for Japan features a unique ‘C’ emblem for the domestic market models.

    Also sharing his views about the Corolla, Takeshi Miyao, managing director of consultancy Carnorama said, “By adding connected capabilities to a model known for being popular among older drivers, Toyota is trying to attract younger people to the Corolla, and widen its customer base (at home). By doing so, it is betting that the next car trend may not be based on vehicle segment or model, but perhaps on applications, or functions.”

    Based on the Japanese carmaker’s latest modular TNGA architecture, the newly launched Toyota Corolla Sport shares the platform with the Auris sold in Europe. According to the company, the new platform is more rigid than its predecessor and has a lower centre of gravity as well. Apart from this; the new Corolla Sport’s styling is based on the company’s latest design theme, which is also seen on the popular C-HR crossover. The hatchback also comes with a long list of features and LED lights as standard.

    At the inside, the seats on the new Toyota Corolla Sport are done in red and black that look really sporty. Customers who buy the new Toyota Corolla will get the T-Connect service for three years. This will help them use the company’s premium services like artificial intelligence assisted navigation assistance and 24x7 live operator that will help them in any situation.

    In terms of features, the newly launched Toyota Corolla Sport gets Toyota’s data communication module as standard for the Japanese-spec model. The safety feature includes Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 – a suite of features that includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, intelligent cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and even auto high beams.

    Toyota has launched the sports version of the hatchback in the Japanese market and the price of the new Toyota Corolla Sport starts at 2,138,400 Japanese yen in Japan that translates to Rs 13.31 lakh in Indian currency. The figure reaches up till 2,689,200 Japanese yen which means Rs 16.74 lakh. The newly launched Sport edition of the hatchback takes against the likes of the Hyundai i30 and the Honda Civic hatchback in the international markets. However, the automaker has not confirmed anything regarding launching the Toyota Corolla Sport hatchback in the Indian market instead the Japanese automaker will be launching an all-new Corolla sedan based on the new TNGA platform to India. Also, as part of the recent partnership between Toyota and Maruti, the new Corolla will be built in India for Maruti as well in order to help Maruti expand its line-up and give the carmaker a premium offering that could be retailed from the Nexa sales network in the country.
