Volkswagen has unveiled the seventh- generation Golf GTI TCR concept at the annual Wörthersee fan meet in Austria. The Golf GTI TCR is the fastest ever road-legal Golf to be manufactured and is the road version of the two-time winner of the international TCR race series. Though it’s a special edition car and has been confirmed for production later this year, according to the automaker it’s not going to be a limited edition car.
Unveiling the GTI TCR concept, Jürgen Stackmann, Sales, Board of Management of Volkswagen AG said, “At the moment, the Golf GTI TCR Concept – an athlete derived from racing – is a study. But at the end of the year, we want to make this GTI vision come true.”
The special edition VW Golf GTI TCR will come powered by 2.0-litre turbo engine capable of producing 289 bhp of maximum power and will come mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) gearbox with locking differential. The car will offer the top speed of 264 kmph making it the fastest ever road-legal Golf to be manufactured till date by VW.
Talking about the design and features at the exterior, a new front bumper, high-shine black applications on the side intakes, modified airflow and a sharply contoured splitter as a front spoiler are the prominent design elements at the exterior. Improving the features list is newly designed panel attachment on the side continued till the rear end as well as providing additional downward thrust on the rear axle is the curve of the roof section that joins a spoiler. Other than these, the VW GTI TCR concept gets 18-inch "Belvedere" forged wheels from the Wolfsburg plant as standard while the newly designed 19-inch alloy wheels will also be there as an option. The perforated brake discs with special brake calipers and pads behind the alloy wheels are the other features on offer. Other highlighting features include two extra radiators in the front while the stainless steel exhaust system and end pipes also tuned for higher performance in the concept. However, the titanium exhaust system from Akrapovic is also available as an option.
Inside the VW Golf GTI TCR concept, the automaker has offered microfibre/fabric covers at the door inserts and gear stick cover. While the seat centre sections are in the contrasting color Flash Red serving as a bridge to the red contrasting stitching on the sports steering wheel, the leather cover is specially imprinted at 3 and 9 o'clock and features a red 12 o'clock stripe. Also, the seatbelts too incorporate this typical GTI color scheme like the gear lever with red stripes.
So, as the VW has confirmed the production version of the Golf GTR TCR concept in the second half of 2018, the car is expected to be launched in the European market by the end of this year. However, there is no official confirmation about launching the upcoming VW Golf GTR TCR in other markets till now and it is expected looking at the demand of the car in other markets of the world.
