As we witness the auto behemoths giving in to the massive SUV demands, mega-luxury British brand Rolls-Royce has joins the SUV bandwagon. It is already known that Rolls-Royce is busy developing its first ever SUV model, named as the Cullinan. The Rolls-Royce Cullinan has already been spied quite a few times. Now recently, the Cullinan SUV or the “high-sided bodied vehicle” as Rolls-Royce calls it, has been spotted testing on the roads of California by an auto enthusiast.
The Rolls-Royce Cullinan which was caught in California is not much different than the test prototype models which were spotted earlier. The spied test mule wore the same heavy camouflage to hide its styling just like before. The test prototype of the Cullinan is also believed to be testing the roads with quite a few decoy body panels and parts. For instance, the conventional door handles of the rear doors are thought to be fake and simply put on to misguide the onlookers, as it is believed the ultra luxury SUV will actually feature suicide doors. The SUV’s test model also wears a thick camouflage on its rear windshield to make it look smaller than its actual size. The test mule also gets decoy tail lights in order to cover up the real design of the rear end. Thus, the new upcoming RR SUV’s test prototype is hiding as much as possible from the public before the Cullinan’s official unveiling.
However, the upcoming SUV’s front fascia is unmistakably Rolls-Royce, and nothing can hide this very obvious fact. The test model features Rolls-Royce’s patent traditional and majestic massive vertical grille, which is flanked by slim LED headlights. Nevertheless, we still know very little about the real design language of Rolls-Royce’s (RR) first ever SUV model, though the silhouette is evidently boxy like any traditional SUV model. However, being ultra luxurious and bespoke model, the RR SUV will certainly be a class apart and a class of its own.
The RR Cullinan’s details are still very scarce and there are no concrete reports about its mechanical specs. However, it is thought that the SUV will get powered by the powertrain options which are already doing the duty for the rest of the RR models. The powertrain range includes a BMW sourced 6.6L twin-turbocharged V-12 mill that can offer over 600 hp and 600 lb-ft. This massive mill is expected to get paired to a ZF 8 speed automatic transmission. AWD system is expected to be offered as an option, if not offered as standard.
The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is based on a new aluminum intensive platform which also underpins the new generation 2018 Phantom. This new platform will also eventually be used to roll out other new generation and upcoming RR models. The Cullinan will be a bespoke model just like all Rolls-Royce models, and it won’t be meant for all SUV lovers. It is expected to have a price range if around a whopping $400,000. Post market launch, the Cullinan will lock its horns with the Bentley Bentayga and a range of upcoming ultra luxury SUVs like the Aston Martin DBX, the Lamborghini Urus and the Mercedes-Maybach.
