Rolls-Royce Phantom ready to accommodate electric powertrain

by V3Cars Team on Tuesday, Dec 12 2017

The international auto market is getting future ready and making a major move towards electrification. As electric vehicles are not only the need of the hour, but the latest trend as well, even mega-luxury auto giant Rolls-Royce has decided to go the electric way. The company had already revealed that it is not interested in in-between solutions and will not offer any hybrid models, but would straight adopt full-electric technology. Over the next decade, the iconic British luxury behemoth will look to make the necessary transition from fuel sipping powerful engines to the advanced electric ones, as per the Chief Executive Officer of Rolls-Royce Torsten Müller-Ötvös.

While speaking on the development, Müller-Ötvös said that the switch to electrification is the right way forward for the most revered brand in the automotive industry of the world. As per a recent report, the RR CEO has revealed that the company’s flagship model, the Phantom already has a platform in place which was built with the intention of supporting battery powered electric motors as well. He said that the architecture of the new generation model of the Phantom already has provisions to accommodate the electric requirements, and it is also capable of offering a fully electric drivetrain in the coming decade. Müller-Ötvös further said that this could happen in the near future as well.

However, Rolls-Royce is not adopting electric technology simply to help the environment, but rather because it is a necessity mandated by the governments. The major push towards electrification is due to the fact that most of the major city centres of the world will be banning all combustion engine powered vehicles over the next decade in order to combat spiraling population levels. However, even that time a Rolls-Royce customer might want to drive into the city centre with his car. And this is reason, why Rolls-Royce has decided to make a shift to electric, said the company.

Rolls-Royce shouldn’t have many issues in adopting the electric motor either, as it would get very well integrated with the brand's famed qualities. Electric powertrains are known to be super silent, and quiet cabins are synonymous with the bespoke auto major. Rolls-Royce even boasts about its new-gen Phantom to be the world’s most silent motor car. For this, RR had to put over 130kg of sound insulation in the new Phantom. An electric motor can make this task so much simpler and save so much weight as well.

The new eighth generation Rolls-Royce Phantom was introduced at an exclusive event in the United Kingdom this year. The 8th gen Phantom is the first RR model that is based on the company's new aluminium space frame architecture. The upcoming Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV is also expected to be underpinned by the advanced platform.

While speaking about the Cullinan, Müller-Ötvös said that the project Cullinan is on track and the company will stick to the original launch time period. He had mentioned that the Cullinan will come a year after the Phantom’s arrival. Thus, the Cullinan SUV is expected to be making its global debut in around November, 2018, followed by its deliveries commencing by January, 2019.
