Global auto majors are all eager to get their own autonomous technology to offer their driver-less cars as soon as possible. In this race several auto giants are working together with technological giants, while some are working on their own. Tesla is also working to get its own autonomous driving technology. The American electric vehicle manufacturer has been garnering a lot of attention for its fascinating premium EV models, and as the future car models are supposed to be mostly all-electric, Tesla’s massive growth is already confirmed. Thus, Tesla is getting future ready with not only amazing futuristic design, but also technology which includes fully autonomous driving capabilities.

Thus, Tesla is getting future ready with not only amazing futuristic design, but also technology which includes fully autonomous driving capabilities.

Tesla is close to getting its own technology to handle autonomous driving in its upcoming models. The EV maker has received its first samples of the chips to start implementing the autonomous technology in its cars, and the company has already started testing the same, as per a source who is close to the development.

This effort of Tesla to build its own chip is in line with the company’s drive to be uprightly integrated and to reduce reliance on other companies. However, Tesla is not going about completely solo when its chip development is concerned, revealed the source. Tesla will build it on top of the AMD intellectual property.

In the meantime, AMD shares rose after media reported that the company is working with Tesla. Recently while speaking on this development, at AMD’s technology conference in Santa Clara, California, the CEO of AMD spin-off and chip fabricator GlobalFoundries, Sanjay Jha simply mentioned Tesla as an instance of companies which are working with fabricators. GlobalFoundries is a chip fabricating company which has a wafer supply agreement with AMD till 2020.

In its statement, GlobalFoundries said that the company does not reveal or comment on customers or its potential customers, and Jha denied that the company was directly working with Tesla.

A power-efficient chip would help Tesla approach its goal to deliver total autonomous driving abilities. The Chief Executive Officer of Tesla, Elon Musk promised this year that the company will be able to offer this capability to its consumers in 2019. Meanwhile, the company’s silicon project is leaping forward under the company’s chip architect Jim Keller, who is the boss of the Autopilot hardware and software department.

According to the source, over 50 people are working under Keller on this initiative and Tesla has also brought many AMD experts on-board after appointing Keller, which includes director Ganesh Venkataramanan. However, nothing has been confirmed by either of the companies. While AMD said it would not comment, Tesla said it will not comment on speculations.

At present, Tesla cars use Nvidia graphics processing cards as part of Autopilot self-driving hardware. Earlier the company used Mobileye chips, but the association ended last year when a Mobileye-powered Tesla model had an accident. Mobileye got acquired by Intel earlier this year, however Tesla is not working with Intel either.
