Volkswagen has unveiled the OFFROAD version of the Tiguan SUV at the ongoing Moscow Motor Show in Russia. The mid-size SUV is called the Tiguan OFFROAD by VW and apart from few minor changes in the design; the SUV looks identical to the standard version of Tiguan. However, this one will be more inclined towards Off-roading.
At the exterior, the VW Tiguan OFFROAD gets a set of off-road bumpers that provide an increased approach angle of 26 degrees as well as an R-Line spoiler, black-painted side mirrors, 17-inch Tulsa alloy wheels, rear LED lanterns with 3D design and optional adaptive LED headlights. The automaker is providing a number of exterior color options to choose from – White Silver, Pure White, Deep Black and Tungsten Silver along with the option of getting the roof painted black as well.
At the interior, the newly revealed VW Tiguan OFFROAD will offer dual-tone black-and-beige cabin with grey-black theme for the OFFROAD as well as rubber mats, light-alloy pedal pads and door sills with ‘OFFROAD’ inscribed on them. Other highlights include an all-digital instrument cluster, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors and a powered tailgate. However, apart from the all-digital instrument cluster, all the other features come as standard in the Indian-spec Tiguan as well.
Making the Tiguan OFFROAD more likeable, Volkswagen is also offering the ‘Innovation package’. The package includes adaptive cruise control, adaptive LED lights and Park Assist semi-automatic parking system as standard, while optional features include the 18-inch black-colored Sebring alloy wheels and a black roof.
Mechanically, similar to the standard version of Tiguan, the VW Tiguan OFFROAD also offers three engine options in Russia – the 1.4 TSI petrol engine producing 148 bhp and the 2.0 TSI generating 177 bhp, while a 2.0-litre diesel engine with 148 bhp is also on offer. The same diesel motor powers the standard Tiguan in India. Along with standard 177 bhp variant, the 2.0-litre TSI is also available in the more powerful 217 bhp tune in the standard Russia-spec Tiguan. In terms of transmission, the petrol engines will come mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox, the diesel engine on the other hand will be offered with a 7-speed DSG only. Also, all the three engines will come equipped with 4-Motion all-wheel-drive.
Though it is still not confirmed if the automaker will bring the Tiguan OFFROAD to other international markets, however VW will commence the bookings for the upcoming Tiguan OFFORAD from October 1st, 2018 in the Russian market. The OFFROAD variant of the SUV will be built alongside the normal Tiguan at the Volkswagen Group Rus plant in Kaluga, Russia. As for Indian market, currently we are waiting for the launch of the Jeep Compass Trailhawk in the mid-size SUV segment for off-roading.
