SUVs are the new badi-gaadi these days, not the sedan. So, it makes sense for the carmakers to bring in new technology in an SUV body style to maximize adoption.
For 2020, we have 2 electric SUVs confirmed to go on sale early in the year. That’s the MG ZS for the premium segment of buyers while the Tata Nexon electric caters to the slightly more reasonable end of the price bracket.
The MG ZS electric SUV will be launching in India early in 2020 to challenge the Hyundai Kona. The ZS has performance figures and range comparable with the Kona but we expect it to carry a lower price tag. The ZS electric makes 143PS of power and 353Nm of torque. So, it’s high on power than the Kona but low on torque. It claims to deliver 340km of range on a full charge and a 0-100kmph sprint time of 8.5 seconds. We expect it to cost around Rs. 22.0 lakh (ex-showroom) when it goes on sale. MG is offering early adopters free access to MG’s fast chargers for a limited period.
Tata Nexon EV
Tata Motors also wants to grab a share in the budding electric SUV market. The Nexon EV will go on sale in January 2020. The upcoming Tata Nexon EV is based on the existing subcompact SUV model. However, the all-electric version gets the design update of the Nexon facelift.
It features a sunroof, new steering wheel and a 7-inch full-colour LCD instrument cluster. It makes 129PS of power and 245Nm of torque. Tata says that the Nexon electric can go for 300km on a full charge. It can also sprint to 100kmph from standstill in under 10 seconds. The Nexon electric will come with an 8-year/1.6 lakh kilometre warranty to offer some peace of mind to the first movers.
The Tata Nexon all-electric SUV is expected to come with a price range of around Rs. 15.0 to 17.0 lakhs (ex-showroom).
