German automaker Volkswagen revealed its first ever fully electric race car I.D.R Pikes Peak on April 22 at a racetrack in Alès, France. The car is purposely built to take part in the legendary annual American hill climb race, Pikes Peak challenge, to be held in the U.S.A. in June 2018. The computer sketches of the I.D. R Pikes Peak race car were first revealed in March this year by Volkswagen Motorsport.
The race car will be attempting the Pikes Peak hill climb on June 24 in Alès, France. The ‘R’ in the name stands for racing and the testing will begin the next day itself, to prepare for the iconic hill climb. In terms of looks, the racing car will be a visual treat for the auto enthusiasts. It will get striking design, the big muscular wheel arches that accommodate the large wheels, the front spoiler and the massive rear wing. It will also offer a full LED headlight and tail light strip in the front and rear.
Though the powertrain details have not been revealed yet, but we can expect the VW I.D. R Pikes Peak to come powered by “a powerful electric power unit,” which will channel torque to all four wheels. The upcoming VW I.D. R Pikes Peak will be capable to cover 19.99 kilometres and 1,440 metres in altitude in just 9 minutes. The condition is no crash barriers and steep slopes up to some hundred metres. The recent event at Pikes Peak is named as the “Race to the Clouds” which begins from 2,862 metres and reaches 4,302 metres considering above sea level. From more than 100 years, this hill climb has been quite interesting in the world of motor racing. The company participated in 1987 with an iconic twin-engine Golf.
Speaking about the VW I.D. R Pikes Peak, Frank Welsch- Member of the Board of Management, VW said, “We want to be at the forefront of electro-mobility with Volkswagen and the I.D. family. Competing in the most famous hill climb in the world with the I.D. R Pikes Peak is a valuable test for the general development of electric cars.”
However, VW took part with an iconic twin-engine Golf in 1987 but came up just short of victory. The automaker is now aiming to settle that score by setting a new record for electric cars. Also, in order to satisfy the auto enthusiasts, VW will offer the car with lightweight construction and aerodynamic perfection contributing to an exciting design that houses a powerful electric power unit. Also, VW is focusing on knowledge gained during the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb project will be incorporated in the future development of performance-optimized electric cars at R GmbH. Let’s see what else VW has to offer with this much anticipated fully electric racing car by the company. Stay tuned to V3cars.com for the details from the global debut of the VW I.D. R Pikes Peak on 22nd April 2018.
