Volkswagen has launched the new a new electric car brand by the name SOL in China. The newly launched brand's first product that goes by the name E20X and it is an electric SUV has also been launched along with the brand at the recently concluded 2018 Beijing International Motor Show. For the introduction of their new brand in China, VW joined hands with Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group Corp (JAC) brand from China.
Speaking at the launch, VW Group’s newly appointed Chairman of the Board of Management and CEO, Dr. Herbert Diess said, “As the world’s biggest automotive market, China plays a prominent role across all Group brands. The strong bond with our joint ventures and business partners will remain. We are accelerating to make mobility cleaner, safer and more intelligent to really improve people’s lives. We will be starting local production of battery-electric cars in at least six factories by 2021 in China.”
Also addressing the media at the launch, Dr. Jochem Heizmann, Chief Executive Officer and President of VW Group China said, “Volkswagen is moved by people and aims to provide the best mobility solutions for people. As a pioneer of individual mobility in China for more than 30 years, People’s Mobility is at the very core of Volkswagen Group China and is behind our commitment to building a smart, sustainable future of individual mobility for its customers in China, together with our partners.”
Though, the automaker didn’t reveal much detail about the E20X apart from the car being a reworked version of the JAC iEV7 electric SUV and the electric SUV is able to cover a distance of 300 km in a single full charge. Proper details on the powertrain have not been disclosed as of now but it is speculated that the E20X uses the same set up as the iEV7S model. Apart from this, the features offered with the newly launched E20X include parking assist, a 360-degree camera, artificial intelligence and intelligent connectivity among others. Volkswagen has also announced that it aims to launch 40 new energy vehicles in the next 8 years and it will have the localized production of electric cars in at least six of its production facilities in China. The price of the new E20X electric SUV will be almost 1,25,000 yuan that is around Rs 13.13 lakh.
This is not the first time that VW has launched a brand for a specific market. Earlier the automaker had launched the ID brand for the European and international markets. With this SOL brand in China the company aims to be at the forefront of key areas that will define the future of mobility. It believes the future will be determined by the electrification of cars to tighten pollution control, and the deployment of information technologies like artificial intelligence to advance the level of comfort. The company is also aiming to take People’s Mobility to “the fourth dimension of mobility,” whereby the car will be a smart, self-moving device embedded in a digitalized eco-system.
