Volvo XC40 Grabs 2018 Women’s World Car Of The Year Award
Volvo XC40 has been crowned as the Women’s World Car of the Year (WWCOTY) 2018. The car won the prestigious award after beating the BMW X2, Jaguar E-Pace and I-Pace, Porsche Cayenne and Peugeot 508. This was the ninth edition of the Women’s World Car of the Year Awards and the jury made up of 34 respected women motoring writers from 27 different countries.
The jury initiated the month- long process to pick the 2018 Women’s World Car of the Year in September, employing a new voting system which is said to reflect varying market trends and vehicle availability. According to the results, the Volvo XC40 edged out the Jaguar E- Pace to take the top prize by the smallest of margins.
Since its reveal in September 2017, the Volvo XC40 has proved to be a successful product for Volvo. The SUV also bagged the 2018 European Car of the Year at the Geneva Motor Show. Recently, the XC40 breezed through Euro- NCAP tests with a five- star rating as well. The Volvo XC40 is available in three variants - Momentum, R-Design and Inscription. While the Momentum is the base- spec variant priced at Rs 39.9 lakh, the Inscription is the top-spec variant with a price tag of 43.9 lakh (ex- showroom India). The SUV gets a 2.0- litre, 4- cylinder unit that produces 188 bhp of maximum power and 400 Nm of peak torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8- speed automatic transmission and a front- biased 4WD system. In terms of features, the Volvo XC40 offers a 9- inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8- way electrically adjustable driver’s seat, dual zone climate control with rear AC vents, a 13- speaker Harman Kardon sound system, front and rear heated seats and a panoramic sunroof as well as Level 2 autonomous driving with lane keep aid and radar-based cruise control along with hill start assist, hill descent control and park pilot assist as safety features. The SUV takes against the likes of the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Mercedes- Benz GLA.
Also, the women motoring writers of the jury selected their Dream Car and this category is named as the ‘Holly Reich Dream Car Award since 2016. The cars are selected on the basis of the one who they aspire to own and drive. This award pays homage to Holly Reich who was the renowned motoring writer and died in 2016. The 2018 Holly Reich Dream Car Award has been bagged by the Aston Martin Vantage.
This time a new award called the ‘Woman of Worth’ was introduced in order to recognize a woman in the motor industry who deserves a special mention. The judges presented the ‘Woman of Worth’ award to Fiona Pargeter of Jaguar Land Rover. She is the customer experience director at Jaguar Land Rover who has consistently encouraged women to participate in car launches and events, according to the judges.
The Women’s World Car of the Year awards was started in 2009 and by December 2018, 36 journalists from 28 countries will be part of the panel and more will be added through 2019 for the 10th iteration of the awards. Previously, the WWCOTY awards winner list include the Hyundai Ioniq in 2017, the Jaguar F-Pace in 2016, Volvo’s XC90 in 2015, the Mercedes- Benz S- class in 2014 and the Ford Fiesta EcoBoost in 2013.
