Volvo Cars Achieve Key Sustainability Milestones (Press Release) | V3Cars
Volvo Cars reported progress across sustainability initiatives including climate action and circular economy efforts. The company achieved significant reductions in emissions and increased adoption of electrified vehicles. The update highlighted ongoing global and India-focused sustainability programs.
Here’s what Volvo Cars have to say about the sustainability update:
Volvo Cars is making significant progress on its sustainability journey, focusing on climate action, circular economy, and responsible business, as per its recently published Annual and Sustainability Report 2025. The company has, globally, reduced CO₂ emissions per car by 31% compared to its 2018 baseline. A major factor in this achievement is the increasing share of electrified vehicles and plug-in hybrids, which now make up 46% of Volvo Cars' global sales. This shift has lowered tailpipe emissions by 42%.
Additionally, Volvo Cars has made major efforts to lessen the impact of its manufacturing processes. Currently, seven out of nine production facilities run on climate-neutral energy, accounting for 87% of the energy used in its operations. The company's goal of using 25% recycled and bio-based materials in new models by 2025 has already been surpassed, with EX60 using 27% recycled materials. Water withdrawal per manufactured car has decreased by 29% thanks to water efficiency initiatives implemented across all facilities.
In India, Volvo Car India is contributing towards these global ambitions through initiatives that focus on environmental restoration and responsible operations. Under its Reverse Project, the company has successfully planted over 35,359 native trees with an average survival rate of 92% at an urban dump yard in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. This has resulted in a lush green urban forest, thereby sequestering an equivalent of 42,571 tons of carbon dioxide and producing nearly 30,964 tons of oxygen. Currently, as part of the Reverse Project, Volvo Car India is planting over 20,000 trees at Matri Van along the Gurugram-Faridabad Highway in the Aravalli region of Haryana.
Moreover, the company’s dealership network is also committed to sustainability and focuses on solar power utilization, water recycling responsible waste management practices.
Mr. Jyoti Malhotra, Managing Director, Volvo Car India said:
“Sustainability remains central to Volvo Cars vision globally, and in India we are committed to supporting these ambitions through initiatives such as the Reverse Project and G.R.E.E.N Dealerships. These initiatives reflect our focus on contributing to environmental restoration while moving steadily towards our global goal of becoming a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions company by 2040.”
These advancements are in line with Volvo Cars commitment of continuously reducing its environmental impact while growing its business.
