2020 Mahindra Thar is the long-awaited off-road SUV, which is getting a new frame and engines this year besides a BS6 upgrade. Mahindra officials had earlier confirmed that the Thar will get an automatic transmission.
The next-gen Thar is likely to get a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine and a 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine. Now we know that the diesel engine will definitely get the automatic transmission as a specimen was spotted doing test runs. The petrol engine may also get automatic transmission as the demand for auto boxes is on the rise. Given the growing demand for petrol engines across all segments and price points, both engines may get the option of 4-wheel drive. Both the engines will certainly get a 6-speed manual transmission.
The older Thar established itself as the ultimate off-roader with plenty of aftermarket support to go over all possible obstacles imaginable. The new one will focus on refinement and comfort so that the owners can use their Thar for everyday duties as well.
LED DRLs, power-folding outside mirrors, user-removable hardtop, touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, automatic AC, colour screen MID in the instrument cluster are the other creature comforts you can expect in the next-gen Thar 2020.
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny’s appeal lies in its refinement as it neither looks out of place off-roading on the trails nor commuting in chockablock city traffic. Considering how rounded up the Thar looks in the spy shots, it may make the Jimny redundant. After all, the Thar has a reputation for being a hard-core off-roader while the Jimny will have to earn it. The Thar also has near-infinite aftermarket support for upgrades while the Jimny has none of it.
Mahindra showed off plenty of concept cars and turbo petrol engines at the Auto Expo 2020 but failed to generate excitement around realistic cars, which we can buy. The pavilion didn’t have the next-generation Thar 2020, next-gen XUV500 and the Scorpio facelift. All of these are supposed to go on sale well before the next auto show. The Thar is slated for launch just ahead of the 2020 festive season. Expect aggressive pricing for the Thar 2020 to fend off against the incoming Jimny invasion.
