2020 Tata Altroz Petrol Specifications
Since Tata is advertizing the Altroz as the new gold standard of premium hatchbacks, we can expect it to have some class-leading specs to go with the claim. Tata offers a powerful 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine with the Nexon, Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP. With the Nexon, this engine is available with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed AMT automatic. However, the JTP twins come with a 5-speed manual transmission. So, we know that this engine is available with a 5-speed as well as 6-speed manual transmission option.

Based on the spy shots, we already know that the Altroz has a 5-speed manual transmission. So, we can say that the engine-transmission combo for the petrol Altroz will come from the Tiago/Tigor JTP. The two JTP models make 114PS of power and 150Nm of torque. To maintain the ‘performance hatchback’ status of the JTP cars, they’ll probably retain a higher power output, but the Altroz could match the torque figure. So, a 110PS/150Nm sounds like a reasonable compromise. This way, the Nexon could justify a higher price tag as it has even higher torque output of 170Nm and a 6-speed transmission.
This engine is also available with an AMT automatic option in the Nexon, but that’s a 6-speed automatic. For the Altroz, we expect Tata to launch the car with just the manual transmission to gauge the demand before adding an automatic to the range. The Altroz’ automatic transmission could be a 6-speed unit straight out of the Nexon.
2020 Tata Altroz Diesel Specifications
The demand for diesel engines is dying down, especially because these would become even more expensive to own and maintain in the BS6 era. We’re not holding our breath to see the Altroz diesel right away, but it could join the lineup later. Tata is not likely to discontinue the 1.5-litre diesel engine after BS6 norms kick in. In this segment, the Hyundai Elite i20 will continue to be available with a diesel engine after March 2020 as well. Hyundai has stated that it would continue to offer diesel engines on all existing diesel cars in the BS6 era as well.
In such circumstances, we can’t expect Tata to give up diesel engines so easily. So, if the Tata Altroz has to get a diesel engine, we’d expect it to borrow the 1.5-litre turbo diesel mill from the Nexon. For the Altroz, it could be slightly detuned as this lighter hatchback doesn’t need as much power as the Nexon. Just like the petrol Altroz, we expect a 105PS power output for the diesel Altroz and a 240Nm torque output. Diesel engines with 6-speed transmissions are already very common in the premium hatchback space. The Hyundai i20 and Honda Jazz, both have it. So, we expect the Altroz diesel to have nothing less than a 6-speed manual transmission.
