Next-Gen Maruti Swift To Get Turbo Petrol Engine - Guesstimate | V3Cars

Maruti Suzuki recently re-introduced a turbo petrol engine in their portfolio after a long time. Earlier, it was available in the Baleno RS variant and it carried a steep premium. However, this time around, we believe Maruti Suzuki are serious about democratising the 1.0L turbo petrol engine. This move will help Maruti Suzuki gain some market share among entry-level turbo petrol engine cars.

2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift

Currently, almost all carmakers have a small turbo petrol engine in their portfolio. Hyundai, Kia, Nissan and Renault have a 1.0L turbo petrol engine. Tata and Mahindra have a 1.2L turbo petrol engine. The rise in demand for turbo petrol engines shows that the market has moved away from the perception of “high displacement equals high performance” mindset.

Turbo petrol engines offer better drivability and performance than higher-displacement normal petrol engines. Meanwhile, they also help deliver better fuel efficiency and these cars also enjoy lower taxes as they qualify for the small car tax slabs.

If the Fronx gets a turbo petrol engine, then it’s only natural for us to expect this engine in the Swift. After all, the Swift has the handling to go with the peppy performance of the turbo petrol engine. However, we’re not expecting the current generation Swift to get this turbo petrol engine.

Maruti Suzuki need time to gauge the market response towards their turbo petrol engine. It also takes time to refine it further to make sure it works flawlessly and reliably in our climatic and driving conditions. In the meantime, the Swift will become ripe for a generation change. The current-gen Swift came in 2018. Considering that it got a mid-life update in 2021, we can say that it has a 6-year lifecycle. With that in mind, we should expect to see the next-generation model in 2024. The turbo petrol engine will also help the Swift earn and justify its ‘hot hatch’ title.
