by Saransh Goyal on Thursday, Sep 24 2020

Mahindra showcased the second-gen Mahindra Thar on 15 August 2020 and the 3-door SUV is scheduled to go on sale on 2 October 2020. And while the launch is still a week away, sources have confirmed that Mahindra has green flagged the development of the 5-door version of the Thar SUV.

Although it is too soon to say anything about the 5-door Thar, it would be safe to assume that the 5-door SUV will have a longer wheelbase compared to its 3-door version and it might also be longer in length. For reference, the 3-door Thar is 2985mm long and has a wheelbase of 2450mm. Other dimensions of the 5-door Thar are likely to remain identical to that of the 3-door version.

It is likely to get the same set of petrol and diesel engines. The petrol engine on offer is a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit making 150PS and a 2.2-litre diesel engine producing 130PS. Both these engines are offered with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission along with a 4WD system as standard.

On the features front, expect the 5-door Thar to get dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, electric AC, manual day/night IRVM, cruise control, steering mounted control, hill launch assist, hill descent control, electronic stability program and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The introduction of the 5-door Thar will be a critical addition to the Thar lineup considering its arch-rival force Gurkha will also be available in both 3-and 5-door versions. In addition to this, Maruti is also expected to launch the Jimny in India in the 5-door avatar.

It is too soon to say anything about the launch of the 5-door Thar but expect it to go on sale earliest by late 2021. While the prices of the 3-door Thar are likely to range from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 14 lakh, expect the prices of the 5-door Thar to start around Rs 11 lakh.
