Here, we have listed 5 key details of the new Baleno.

  1. Technologically Advanced

Maruti are marketing the new Baleno as ‘Technologically Advanced’. The new Baleno will get many new features over the outgoing model. From the official teasers and leaked documents, we know that it will get features like a head-up display (HUD) and a 360-degree camera setup, which no car in the segment gets as of now. The most affordable car you can currently buy with a HUD is the Kia Seltos.

Other than this, the Baleno will also get cruise control, a new, 9-inch  touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Arkamys sound, and connected car technology. The new Baleno will also get rear AC vents, which the current model misses out on. Despite this, the new Baleno will miss out on a full-colour LCD instrument cluster, sunroof, and a rear armrest. These features are available in one or the other premium hatchbacks in the market. It does get a smaller full-colour MID in the instrument cluster.

While the side profile will remain the same, it will get a bit more chrome and slightly restyled alloy wheels, albeit 16-inches in size as before. The interior will get a complete overhaul. It will get a new flat-bottom steering wheel borrowed from the Swift as well. The dashboard layout is layered and the colour theme is blue and black with silver accents. Even the seat upholstery is blue and black in colour. The front seats, AC vents design, media control, and AC control switches are all new. Overall, the new Baleno will appear much fresher inside and out.

The new Baleno will also get the option of a new Beige exterior colour over the existing 5 colour options.

  1. Better Safety

In the latest statement regarding the new Baleno, Maruti emphasized a lot on safety. The new Baleno will also get 6 airbags, electronic-stability program and hill-hold assist on the top-spec variants to make the car safer. Additionally, some rumours from the past suggested that Maruti will use better sheet metal to make the Baleno even safer.

Recently, the government proposed a rule that mandates all cars that can seat up to 8 passengers to be equipped with 6 airbags. By offering 6 airbags at the launch itself, Maruti are keeping the Baleno future-proof.

  1. Powertrain Options

Maruti have confirmed that the new Baleno will continue to use the 1.2L normal petrol engine. The outgoing model had the option of a mild-hybrid setup to help increase power and fuel efficiency, which is now standard across the range. This engine produces 90PS of power and 113Nm of torque.

The current Baleno has the option of a 5-speed manual transmission and a CVT automatic transmission. However, Maruti are replacing the CVT with a 5-speed AMT transmission. This will help them keep the prices of the Baleno’s automatic transmission variants in check as CVT is an expensive technology compared to AMT. The Swift, Dzire, Ignis, Celerio, WagonR, and S-Presso already utilise an AMT transmission.

  1. Best-In-Class Mileage

From the leaked documents, we know the fuel efficiency of the new Baleno. Maruti claim a  mileage figure of 22.35kmpl for the manual variants and 22.94kmpl with the AMT transmission option. This is the best claimed fuel-efficiancy among its petrol peers. However, when compared to the outgoing model, the claimed fuel efficiency has dropped for the manual transmission while increased for the automatic transmission. The added weight in the new Baleno could be the reason for this drop.

Launch and Prices

Maruti will launch the new Baleno on February 23. The new Baleno is likely to be priced at a premium of Rs. 50,000 over the corresponding variants of the outgoing model. Currently, the Baleno is priced between Rs. 6.14 lakh and Rs. 9.66 lakh. While the added features will raise the cost, the move from CVT to AMT will reduce the cost simultaneously.

You can book the new Baleno via the Maruti Nexa website or visit a Nexa dealership. The booking amount is Rs. 11,000.
