Ford is working on an all-new made in India SUV that is expected to come by 2020. This new vehicle will be the one of the fruits of Ford’s new partnership with the Indian auto major Mahindra & Mahindra. The Indo-American joint venture is looking at broad-spectrum automotive possibilities that will benefit both the American and the Indian partnering car companies. Ford and Mahindra are considering collaborating about all the important aspects of car development – from engine to platforms to sharing the same vehicles ranging from SUVs, sedans and EVs. This means, we will get to see many new models that will be rebadged as Mahindra or Ford, but under the skin will be essentially the same vehicle.
The first model that will come as the result of the two companies’ tie-up is an all-new C-segment SUV from Ford, which is likely to launch by the end of 2020. This new Ford badged SUV will be developed specifically for the car market of India. As per Ford, this new SUV will deliver the patent Ford SUV experience and come with a highly aggressive price tag.
This new Ford SUV will be different, as it will not be mere badge-engineered SUV. Unlike the new Mahindra XUV500, which is currently being co-developed by Mahindra & Mahindra and its Korean subsidiary SsangYong, the new Ford SUV which will be sharing the same platform will come with an all-new exterior design. Apart from a different exterior styling, Ford’s SUV will come with a new interior and also a slightly modified and better chassis. As per the sources close to the development, this new SUV will feel and drive like a true Ford vehicle.
When it comes to the exterior design, the doors, windows and the windscreens are the only parts that are expected to be common between the upcoming Mahindra and Ford SUVs. The new Ford C-SUV is expected to come with a wide Ford grille, a large cowl, and sleek, high-mounted headlights. It is also expected to flaunt prominent wheel arches to add to the SUV’s sporty visual appeal, while larger wheels, slightly more body cladding and LED lights are also expected on the Ford representative.
On the inside, the Ford SUV will get a different dashboard and instrument console and the cabin will offer more up-market look and feel along with a differently designed part-leather seat upholstery. Ford is also expected 7-seater and more premium 6-seater version of the. The new-gen Mahindra XUV500 and the upcoming Ford SUV will be sharing the same touchscreen that is based on Ford’s multimedia system.
Under the hood however, the new upcoming Ford C-SUV will be sharing its engines with the next-gen Mahindra XUV500, which is a an all-new 2.0 litre diesel motor developed by Mahindra. This new BSVI compliant diesel motor will be introduced after April 1st, 2020, when the BS-VI will come into act. The oil burner will be paired with a Mahindra 6 speed transmission. An automatic transmission will also be offered and features like ESP, traction control and hill descent control are also expected.
