With the recent technological advancements in the automobile industry, it has become quite evident that the electric and autonomous driving is the future of the mobility and that’s why all the major automobile manufacturers are investing their time and resources towards its development.
Following the footsteps of the others in the automobile industry, this time around Jaguar Land Rover and Waymo have inked a their long-term strategic partnership in order to develop the world’s first premium self-driving electric vehicle, which will be named the Jaguar I-PACE. The electric vehicle will be used for Waymo’s driverless transportation service, serving a potential one million trips per day and it is expected that up to 20,000 units of the electric autonomous SUV will join Waymo’s fleet in only the first two years of production.
JLR and and Waymo, which was formerly Google self-driving car project, will be working together in order to design and engineer self-driving Jaguar I-PACE vehicles. The collaboration between the two automakers is intended to further Waymo and Jaguar Land Rover’s shared goals of making cars safer, freeing up people’s valuable time and improving the mobility for everyone.
Synchronous to the Waymo’s self-driving technology, the company will start testing Waymo Jaguar I-PACEs, sometime later this year. The on-road testing and capturing real-world data done by the company will enable it to refine the technology and deliver optimum safety and reliability. Waymo is targeting to undertake around one million trips per day once it gets its entire fleet up and going.
The Jaguar I-PACE, which was launched earlier this month, is the company’s first full-electric SUV. As said by the company in a statement, JLR is highly committed to investing heavily, in order to become automotive leaders in the autonomous, connected and future electrified technologies.
Waymo is the only company to offer fleet of fully self-driving cars on public roads presently. The company has also planned to launch the world’s first self-driving transportation service which will be allowing the members of the public to use Waymo’s app for requesting a vehicle. The Waymo Jaguar I-PACE is likely to be showcased at the New York International Auto Show this year.
Jaguar Land Rover Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Dr. Ralf Speth, said while talking about the collaboration that with the Jaguar I-PACE, the company has a world-beating car that’s able to have captured the imagination of customers across the world. He further stated that the company’s passion for further advancing smart mobility required expert long-term partners and by joining forces with Waymo, JLR is pioneering to push the boundaries of technology in the automobile industry. He also added that Jaguar Land Rover and Waymo will together deliver the self-driving Waymo Jaguar I-PACE with the customers’ expected grace, space and eco-pace.
In addition to the statement by Speth, Waymo Chief Executive Officer, John Krafcik, said that the focus at Waymo is entirelt on building the world's most experienced driver, the team at Jaguar Land Rover have successfully developed an all-new battery-electric platform which looks capable enough to set a new standard in safety, design and capability. He also stated that the company is quite sure that the Waymo riders will enjoy the safe, premium and delightful experience that the upcoming self-driving I-PACE will offer.
