Maruti Suzuki is all set to bring the 2019 Wagon R in the Indian market on 23rd January 2019. However, the images of the new model have been leaked on the internet ahead of its official launch. The images show that the new- gen model is completely different to the one on sale in Japan though retaining the signature tall- boy design of the previous- gen Wagon R models. Recently, the car was also spotted at a TVC ad shoot.
The leaked images show that the new model comes with signature Maruti's grille with Suzuki emblem at the centre and wraparound headlamps, chrome treatment on the grille looking similar to that of Ignis. The spotted model is the mid- spec variant, which misses out on fog lamps but accommodates newly designed fog lamp housing at the front. At the sides, the hatchback looks bigger than the outgoing model and hints towards more legroom space for rear occupants at the inside. Sharing resemblance with the Ertiga, the Wagon R will come with a floating roofline and creases to the front and rear fenders and doors. Large tail- lamps mounted high up the C- pillar at the rear completes the look of the upcoming Wagon R.
Though the interior of the 2019 Wagon R has not been leaked yet, but at the inside the car will come equipped with a SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system, which will be compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and seat- belt reminder will be offered as standard. We can also expect the reclining seats for the rear passengers inside the Wagon R.
Mechanically, the next- gen Wagon R will come powered by the same 1- liter, 3- cylinder K- Series petrol engine churning out 67 bhp of maximum power and 90 Nm of peak torque. The engine will continue to come mated to a 5- speed manual or AMT gearbox and is slated to be offered with CNG- Petrol and LPG- Petrol dual fuel options in selected markets as well.
Currently, Maruti Suzuki sells the fourth generation Wagon R in the Indian market and didn’t launch the fifth gen model in the country. The reason behind the fifth gen Wagon R not launching in the country is because of the new Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program with stricter crash test regulations. The 2019 model will be the sixth gen Wagon R that will be on sale in India and will meet these new safety regulations.
To be offered in LX, LXI, VXI and VXI Plus variants, the new- gen model is expected to be priced somewhere in the same price bracket. The current version of the Wagon R comes priced between Rs 4.18 lakh and Rs 5.39 lakh (ex- showroom, Delhi). When launched, the next- gen Maruti Suzuki Wagon R will continue to take against the likes of the Tata Tiago, Renault Kwid and Hyundai Santro in the segment.
