Mahindra have silently added a new RWD badge on the 2WD variants of the Thar compact SUV. The new badge sits in the same spot the 4x4 badge sits on the 4WD variants of the Thar. Read on to know more details about the Thar 2WD.

Mahindra launched the Thar 2WD in January, 2023 and to our surprise, it didn’t carry any visual changes over the 4WD variants. The only conspicuous difference between the 2WD and 4WD variants was the absence of the ‘4x4’ badge on the former. However, to fix that, Mahindra have now added a new ‘RWD’ badge to the right rear fender of the Thar, giving it its own identity.

The RWD badge is finished in silver whereas the upper half of the ‘D’ gets a bright red insert. Apart from the new badge, the new Thar 2WD doesn’t carry any visual changes on the outside compared to the 4WD variants. Mahindra offer the Thar 2WD with a 1.5L turbo diesel and a 2.0L turbo petrol engine.

The Thar 2WD diesel variants are powered by the same 1.5L turbo diesel engine seen in the XUV300 and Marazzo. Since the XUV300 and Marzzo are front-wheel-drive cars, the Thar 2WD diesel is the first time Mahindra has mated this engine to a rear-wheel drivetrain. It produces 118PS of power and 300Nm of torque. The 2.0L turbo petrol engine, on the other hand, produces 152PS of power and 320Nm of torque and only comes with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

Take a look at the prices of the Thar 2WD:
Since its launch, Mahindra have hiked the prices of the 2WD diesel variants by around Rs. 55,000 whereas the price of the 2WD petrol AT remains the same, at Rs. 13.50 lakh (ex-showroom).
