The Indo- Japanese automaker Maruti Suzuki has crossed the milestone of selling more than 35 lakh units of Alto hatchback since its launch. The hatch has been the best-selling car in India for 14 consecutive years and the sales number has been achieved in cumulative wholesales by the car.
Speaking about the success, R S Kalsi, Senior Executive Director (Marketing & Sales), Maruti Suzuki said, “Brand Alto continues to remain fresh, relevant and as exciting as it was in 2000. Since 2006, every two years, Alto is adding 5 lakh new happy customers. In 2008, we clocked 10 lakh units. In 2010, it touched 15 lakh units and today in 2018, we have crossed 35 lakhs of cumulative sales. Maruti Suzuki has systematically upgraded the Alto to meet the ever-evolving customer aspirations and strengthen the brand Alto. In 2017-18, nearly 55 percent of customers have selected Alto as their first car purchase in 2017-18. Interestingly, 25 percent of Alto buyers are buying it as an additional car.”
According to a statement released by Maruti Suzuki, the best-selling Alto hatch has clocked a growth rate of 6 per cent in 2017-18 and has also garnered a market share of 33 per cent in the ongoing fiscal. The statement also says that almost 44 per cent of Alto sales contribution comes from young customers less than 35 years of age. This contribution has grown 4 per cent in the past three years. Alto has succeeded in adding 5 lakh new customers every two years, while in 2008, it clocked 10 lakh unit sales, in 2010, the number increased to 15 lakh units.
