Mercedes-Benz readying the new A-Class Saloon, expected launch by 2018
The Mercedes-Benz CLA is the company’s coupe-like premium saloon in the entry level three-box premium segment. In a bid to increase its compact car range, Mercedes-Benz is getting all braced up to introduce the new Mercedes A-Class saloon. As per a latest report by a British auto journal, post the market launch, the upcoming new Mercedes A-Class will be locking its horns with the likes of the BMW 1 Series Sedan and the Audi A3 Saloon.
As per this new report, the upcoming Mercedes A-Class saloon will be placed in the gap between the existing Mercedes CLA and the Mercedes C-Class. With the launch of the Mercedes A-Class Saloon, the German luxury car behemoth is going to target the large car markets of China as well as North America. However, the supplier sources have already confirmed that a right-hand drive version of the new upcoming Mercedes A-Class is also on the cards. This means that the right-hand drive car markets such as UK, Australia, India, Thailand and Japan might also as well get this new entry level saloon model in the future.
Mercedes-Benz has not yet officially confirmed anything about the A-Class Saloon. However, as per the sources who revealed the development to the UK publication, the sedan might be all ready to hit the car markets towards the end of the year 2018. In the same year, the company will also be officially introducing the fourth generation A-Class hatchback model.
The upcoming new A-Class Saloon will be the 6th model to be underpinned on the company’s MFA platform, the first 5 models being the A-Class, B-Class, CLA, CLA Shooting Brake and GLA. The A-Class Saloon is speculated to be bigger in size as compared to the Mercedes CLA that measures 4,630 mm long, 1,780 mm wide and 1,430 mm high. The model will also get an exclusive long wheelbase version for the Chinese car market.
The new upcoming Mercedes A-Class Saloon will be available in both front wheel drive system and four wheel drive system versions. Under the hood, the upcoming A-Class Saloon would be offering a wide range of engines which would include the M264 2.0 liter turbocharged petrol mill, the OM654 2.0 liter turbocharged diesel motor, a 1.6 liter turbocharged petrol engine and a 1.5 liter turbocharged diesel unit from the partnership between Renault and Nissan. Transmission duty will be handled by 6 speed manual transmission gearbox as standard, while the higher trim models will equipped with a sophisticated 9 speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
The A-Class Saloon lineup will be topped by a four wheel drive AMG model which will get equipped with a new updated M133 2.0 liter turbocharged petrol mill which has the capability to churn out a max power of up to 400 bhp. There will be other derivatives as well which would include a gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid model that will be powered by the M264 2.0 liter petrol mill along with an electric motor.;
