by V3Cars Team on Saturday, Dec 03 2016

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has been one of the oldest models in the Indian market which is still going strong in terms of popularity. The Wagon R launched by India’s top car maker back in 1999, but is still one among the top 5 bestselling cars in India beating many of its much newer rivals. On the other hand, the Renault Kwid changed the entire concept of entry level hatchbacks with its stylish and sporty looks and SUV appeal which took the market by storm when it launched last year, and its popularity is constantly growing.

We are pitching the newly launched Maruti Suzuki Wagon R AMT Vs the Renault Kwid AMT:

    Design

The Kwid AMT is a bigger car with more spacious interior and also has higher ground clearance, but is shorter than the Wagon R AMT. The Wagon R is taller owing to its tall-boy design that also offers an airy feel to the cabin.

The Kwid is probably the best looking car in the entry-level hatch segment and is the only model in its own class to offer SUV-like design. It looks contemporary and sporty with an aggressive front facade. Its plastic body cladding makes it look more like a crossover than a mini hatchback.

The Wagon R has a tallboy design with a boxy appeal. It looks upright and neat with a very sober and practical looks. It is simple and nice to look at, but certainly not attractive enough to beat the Kwid which is way more stylish.

    Under The Hood Specifications

The new Renault Kwid AMT gets packed with a 1.0 liter SCe 4-cylinder petrol mill that offers 67 Bhp power and 91 Nm of torque coupled with a 5 speed Easy-R rotary knob automatic gearbox, which is really unique for its class.

The Wagon R’s engine offers 67 bhp of power and 90 Nm of torque and it gets a regular AMT gearstick.

While performance wise both the cars are almost equal, but the Kwid’s engine is a bit peppier and its premium rotary gear knob makes all the difference and gives it an edge.

    Features & Safety

The Kwid AMT offers the same features as the feature-rich manual version and as the AMT gearbox is available only on the top-end model trim, the AMT model offers the best features in the range. It offers premium features like touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation.

The Maruti Wagon R AMT has an edge in terms of comfort features, as it comes with electrically adjustable ORVMs, all four power windows, 60:40 split and folding rear seat and multiple combination utility storage spaces.

    Safety

The Wagon R offers optional dual front airbags as well as ABS, while there is also a collapsible steering column to enhance the car’s safety level. The Renault Kwid lacks dual airbags thus scores low in this department.

Thus, in terms of safety Wagon R AMT has the upper hand.

    Pricing

Wagon R AMT has been priced at Rs 4.76 lakhs for the regular version and at Rs. 4.98 lakhs for the more premium and stylish Stingray editions (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Renault Kwid AMT tagged starting Rs. 3.8 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).
