In this September 2022 cars sales analysis article, we’ll look at the YoY and MoM change in sales figures for each carmaker, segment and body style in India. Where applicable, we’ll also include our observations based on the sales data and possible reasons behind a massive increase or drop in sales.

Brand-Wise September 2022 Car Sales - YoY Change

  • In terms of percentage, Citroen posted the best YoY improvement of 1780%. The massive YoY growth is because of the low numbers Citroen posted in the September of 2021 as it only had the C5 Aircross in its portfolio back then. The addition of the C3 this year has helped the French carmaker improve its overall sales figure in September 2022
  • Mahindra and Maruti posted YoY gains of around 165% and 135%, respectively
  • Tata, too, posted a healthy YoY improvement  of 85%, followed by Kia with 79%
  • Toyota was next on the order with 65% YoY gains in the month of September
  • Volkswagen posted a YoY gains of 60%, Skoda reported a rise of nearly 17% in September 2022 YoY comparison
  • All brands except Jeep posted net positive YoY gains. Jeep’s dispatches declined almost 15% over the past year

  • In terms of MoM change, just about one-thirds of all brands saw a decline in sales in September over August 2022. The Remaining two-thirds saw a growth or remained fairly consistent in dispatch numbers as the previous month
  • Citroen were the top MoM gainer, with a 58% growth.
  • Toyota were the top loser with a 25% lower MoM dispatch figure.

  • In terms of YoY change, the B1 segment was the biggest gainer, posting a YoY growth of 233%. The B1 segment was followed by the D1 segment, with a YoY growth of 111% in September 2022
  • In terms of YoY comparison, all segments witnessed growth

  • Sedans witnessed the biggest YoY growth of roughly 113% in September 2022 compared to September 2021
  • Hatchbacks witnessed a biggest YoY growth of 106%
  • The SUV was the best-selling body style in India. It was closely followed by hatchbacks
  • All body-styles’ sales were up in the past year, starting September 2021
