Currently, the common vehicles between Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are nothing more than a nip and tuck on the face of Maruti Suzuki cars. However, the upcoming hybrid SUVs from Toyota and Maruti Suzuki are a proper joint development. While Toyota will bring their popular hybrid technology, Maruti Suzuki will offer their local supply chain and cost-effective expertise. Toyota will assemble both the SUVs at their Bidadi plant in Karnataka.

Toyota Hyryder are likely to make use of the TNGA-B platform, which could get a high degree of localisation. The Hyryder SUV — codenamed D22 — is likely to come with two engine options. The base engine with a mild-hybrid setup and the other one with a strong-hybrid setup. The latter is also likely to offer some kind of electric range and class-leading fuel efficiency. As Toyota have shifted to petrol fuel for their mass-market cars, we do not expect Hyryder to offer a diesel engine option.

Earlier spy shots revealed that both the Toyota and Maruti hybrid SUVs will get a design differentiation. However, we can expect some shared parts like switchgear, infotainment system and of course the hybrid powertrain. Toyota will make the global debut of the Hyryder hybrid SUV in India on July 1. We expect the launch of the same in the coming weeks after the unveiling. Maruti Suzuki’s hybrid SUV will follow suit at a later stage. Toyota Hyryder hybrid compact SUV will go up against the Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and MG Astor.
