Toyota India are likely to host the global unveiling of the Hyryder hybrid SUV on July 1. Ahead of its unveiling, the details about its powertrain specifications have surfaced online. Toyota are likely to offer two powertrain options with the Hyryder — 1.5L normal petrol with mild-hybrid and 1.5L normal petrol with strong hybrid.

Fresh rounds of rumours suggest that the upcoming Hyryder SUV will come with two engine options with a 4-wheel-drive option. Reports suggest that it’s the mild-hybrid powertrain, which is likely to get the 4-wheel-drive option. Take a look at the leaked specs of both the engine options:

However, we do not expect the mid-hybrid powertrain of the Hyryder to offer 4-wheel-drive. As the mild-hybrid powertrain is not likely to get a dedicated electric motor to channel power to the rear wheels. Given the leaked power spec and the Hyryder’s potential segment rivals, we do not expect Toyota to add the required mechanicals for 4-wheel-drive.

We can expect the Hyryder with the strong hybrid powertrain to offer the 4-wheel-drive option, if at all Toyota decide to offer some exclusivity. The Hyryder is likely to use a strong hybrid drivetrain. To offer 4-wheel-drive, Toyota could mount the electric motor on the rear axle to power the rear wheels. It will not require any driveshaft or other complex mechanicals. However, this will certainly increase the costs and it may become hard for Toyota to offer a competitive price for a C-segment SUV.

Besides the discontinued Duster diesel with 4-wheel-drive, no other C-segment SUV offers the 4-wheel-drive option. We expect Toyota to reveal more details closer to the unveil of the Hyryder, which is likely to take place on July 1.
