Toyota New SUV To Have “Mini” Land Cruiser Traits; Launch In 2025-26 | V3Cars

According to Reuters, Toyota are looking to expand their production capacity in India by adding another plant. The source with knowledge of the matter informed Reuters that the plant will have an initial production capacity of 80,000 - 1,20,000 units per year. This capacity will ramp up to 2 lakh units per year over the next few years once the plant becomes operational.

For this plant, they are planning an India-specific SUV, which will sit between the Hyryder and the Hycross. They see a gap in their portfolio between these cars where the Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV700 continue to churn good numbers month over month. Given their close relationship with Maruti Suzuki, we should also expect a Maruti version of this SUV to land in the Nexa dealerships.

Launch Timeline

The report suggests that the new SUV could go on sale sometime in early 2026. That’s a long time to keep the so-called gap open between the Hyryder and Hycross. Even carmakers working on brand new EV technology have shorter launch timelines. I’d expect the SUV to go on sale sometime in 2025, which is enough time to develop an internal combustion car. Launching it sometime in the 3rd quarter of 2025 will also help them capitalise on the high demand during the festive season.

“Mini” Land Cruiser

The source also informed Reuters that Toyota are planning to bring a “mini” Land Cruiser. The “maxi” Land Cruiser currently costs Rs. 2.10 crore (ex-showroom). The LC isn’t an epitome of luxury for a multi-crore car. It isn’t immensely capable than other cars in this price range either. Hell, it doesn’t even wear a luxury car badge like Lexus. For a car wearing the same badge on its nose as an Etios and costing Rs. 2.10 crore (ex-showroom), it’s mind boggling to see it commanding so much respect and getting a good number of buyers too.

Those who buy it do so for its rock solid reliability, thanks to its mechanical simplicity. If Toyota can infuse similar design and go-anywhere abilities in their upcoming SUV, then it should have enough ammunition to challenge the Safari and XUV700’s dominance.

Toyota New SUV Expected Price

There are still 2 or more years to go for the launch of this rumoured Toyota SUV. Between now and then, we’ll witness some inflation. By then, the Hycross will have moved up a bit on the price scale to make room for the new SUV. With that in mind, we should expect this ‘mini’ Land Cruiser to start at just under Rs. 20.0 lakh.
