Volkswagen Tera 2027 Expected Price — With Logic (Volkswagen’s Kylaq-based 4m SUV) | V3Cars

In this 2027 Volkswagen Tera price range expectation article, we will present the most likely ex-showroom price range of the upcoming VW Tera base model and Tera top model. Once we get the launch confirmation and variant-powertrain combinations of the upcoming Tera, we will try and estimate the variant wise pricing also. We will also present our logic and important considerations gone into estimating the price range of the upcoming sub-4m Tera SUV from Volkswagen — their Kylaq based SUV.

2027 Volkswagen Tera Price Expectations — With Logic (VW Kylaq-Based)

Let’s start with setting the stage for the price range.

Maargins!

The lack of a sub-4m SUV in Volkswagen’s India portfolio must be hurting VW India big time. The Kylaq has shown how much customers love a small car from VW with their punchy turbo petrol engine. Moreover, the tax structure now makes it a lot more lucrative for carmakers to have a sub-4m SUV.

Consider the Kylaq Prestige 1.0L turbo petrol-automatic and the Kushaq Classic Plus 1.0L turbo petrol automatic. The smaller Kylaq pays 18% GST while the Kushaq has a heavier toll of 40%. The Kylaq Prestige automatic has an ex-showroom price of Rs. 12.75 lakh and the Kushaq Classic Plus automatic costs Rs. 12.69 lakh.

Crunch the numbers and you’ll find out that the Kylaq’s ex-factory price tag is Rs. 10.81 lakh while the Kushaq’s is Rs. 9.07 lakh. You see now what I mean! The smaller car, with less material cost, is bringing in Rs. 1.74 lakh more revenue than a larger car carrying similar ex-showroom price. If the Kushaq Classic Plus automatic had an ex-factory price of Rs. 10.81 lakh — the same as that of the smaller Kylaq Prestige automatic — the ex-showroom price of Kushaq would be Rs. 15.13 lakh.

Please note that the small car tax applies to cars under 4 meters long and with petrol/CNG engines with displacements of less than 1.2L. For diesel cars, the displacement limit is 1.5 litres.

The VW Tera Measures 4151mm! So, Chop Chop!

That’s correct!

Back when Mahindra decided to bring the Ssangyong Tivoli to India as the XUV 300, they chopped it down roughly 200mm to take advantage of the lower tax bracket. We’re sure VW India engineers have the expertise to chop down 152mm.

We can pretty much declare that Volkswagen won’t make any changes to the wheelbase. The Tera’s wheelbase is 2566mm long; the same as that of the Kylaq.

As far as the metal panels go, the car should borrow the same from the international Tera. changing those is quite a bit of hassle as it also requires repositioning mounting points and brackets for other panels. Borrowing the same blueprints speeds things up quite a bit for VW India and there’s loss in opportunity costs piling up ever since the Kylaq demonstrated the viability of the sub-4m SUV project.

We expect Volkswagen to have engineered the Tera while keeping VW India needs in mind. That means, they must have designed all the parts, which are difficult to reposition later, such as headlamps, tail lamps, hood, tail gate in such a way that they don’t need to be shoved in to make the Tera India spec. We believe the chopping is going to be limited to the bumpers and cladding to bring it under 4000mm.

2027 Volkswagen Tera Expected Price Range In India

With the Kylaq’s template set, we expect Tera’s India pricing to remain consistent with that of the Kylaq, which currently starts at Rs. 7.59 lakh and tops out at Rs. 12.99 lakh. Adding some buffer for inflation, we arrive at a tentative expected Volkswagen Tera price in India to be Rs. 8.0 lakh to Rs. 13.50 lakh.
