Top 7 Safest Cars Under In Rs. 10 - 15 Lakh - GNCAP Tested

by Mahesh Yadav on Sunday, Sep 05 2021

If you prioritize safety and have a budget of up to Rs. 15 lakh (ex-showroom) to buy a new car, then this list should help you shortlist a few cars with a proven safety score.

Safest Cars Under In Rs. 10 - 15 Lakh

Note: The adult safety score is out of 17 while the child safety score is out of 49. GNCAP condenses the score into a star rating for easy understanding. To maintain consistency, this list only includes made-in-India cars tested by Global NCAP.

    1. Mahindra XUV300

    XUV300

First on the list is the Mahindra XUV300, which scored a near-perfect score of 16.42 points out of 17 for adult safety. The child safety score stood at 37.44 out of 49 for a final rating of 5 and 4 stars for adult and child safety, respectively.

With a budget of Rs. 10 - 15 lakh, you can buy XUV300’s higher petrol variants or pretty much any variant with a diesel engine. Mahindra offers the option of an AMT automatic with both engines.

Note that these scores are for the 2-airbag version of the car. If you buy the higher variants with additional airbags, they’ll offer even better real-world safety.

    2. Tata Nexon

    Nexon

The next one is the Nex-On(e) from Tata Motors. Just like the XUV300, the Nexon gets a 5-star rating for adults but 3 stars for child safety. It scored 16.06 points out of 17 for adult safety and 25 out of 49 for child safety.

Another similarity between the XUV300 and the Nexon is that they’re both available with 1.2-litre turbo petrol and 1.5-litre turbo diesel engines. Moreover, you can have either of them with a manual or an AMT automatic transmission.

The only additional powertrain option you have with the Nexon is electric. If you can live with fewer features, then you can also buy the XM variant of the Nexon EV for Rs. 14 lakh (ex-showroom). Despite the higher ex-showroom cost, the Nexon electric’s XM trim will end up costing less than the XZ Plus (O) if your state offers subsidies on EVs.

    3. Mahindra Marazzo

    Mahindra Marazzo

The Marazzo is a unique MPV offering. It offers the efficiency of a front-wheel drivetrain, the easier ingress-egress like a monocoque car and the ruggedness of a ladder frame MPV. The Mahindra Marazzo is a rare car with a ladder frame chassis and front-wheel drivetrain.

If that’s not enough to convince you to seriously consider the Marazzo, then its safety score certainly will. In the GNCAP test, this MPV scored 12.85 points for adult safety out of 17 and 22.2 points for child safety. Its overall safety rating stands at 4 stars for adults and 2 for kids.

    4. Volkswagen Polo

    Polo

The Polo’s GT variant is the only one in this price range and it costs Rs. 10 lakh (ex-showroom). The GT no longer has its unique turbo-petrol engine advantage over the regular Polo and it has also lost the fast and efficient DCT automatic. But, the torque converter automatics are generally more reliable. So, at least you won’t have to worry about repair bill surprises during the ownership period.

The Volkswagen Polo with 2 airbags scored 12.54 for adult safety and 29.91 for child safety. Its combined safety rating for adult and child occupants stands at 4 stars and 3 stars, respectively. GNCAP tested this car way back in 2014, but the Polo continues to use the same frame and body shell and keeps its safety score intact.

    5. Mahindra Thar

    Mahindra Thar

The new-generation Mahindra Thar scored 12.52 and 4 stars for adult safety and got 4 stars in child safety with a score of 41.1. This off-roader is available:

    • in 2 variants (AX and LX),
    • in 2 configurations (convertible soft top and hardtop)
    • with 2 engine options (2.0-litre turbo petrol and a 2.2-litre turbo diesel)
    • and 2 transmission options (6-speed manual and 6-speed torque-converter automatic).

That’s just 2 many confusing options to choose from. Thankfully, there’s no confusion with 4x4 as it is standard on all trims.
