Despite the growing push towards electrification and stricter emission norms, diesel cars continue to hold strong appeal in India. Their combination of strong torque delivery and high fuel efficiency makes them a practical choice, especially for long-distance and high-usage buyers.
With fuel price differences narrowing, choosing the most efficient diesel car is more important than ever. In this article, we list the top diesel-manual cars and SUVs in India under Rs. 20 lakh (ex-showroom), ranked by their claimed mileage figures.
The Tata Nexon continues to lead the segment as the most fuel-efficient diesel SUV in India. Powered by a 1.5L diesel engine, the Nexon offers a claimed mileage of 23.30kmpl with a 6-speed manual transmission.
Available in multiple variants with features like a panoramic sunroof and dual-tone colour options, the Nexon diesel is priced between Rs. 9.01 lakh and Rs. 13.42 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Tata Altroz remains the only diesel hatchback in India and continues to offer excellent efficiency. With a claimed mileage of 23.0kmpl, it is also the most affordable diesel car on this list.
It uses the same 1.5L diesel engine as the Nexon but is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. Prices range from Rs. 8.10 lakh to Rs. 10.17 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Tata Curvv offers a unique coupe-SUV body style and strong mileage figures. Its diesel-manual variants return a claimed mileage of 22.40kmpl.
Positioned between B2 and C-segment SUVs, the Curvv diesel-manual variants are priced from Rs. 11.10 lakh to Rs. 17.40 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Kia Sonet ranks fourth with a claimed mileage of 22.30kmpl. It shares its 1.5L diesel engine with other Kia and Hyundai models but offers a slightly higher mileage than the second-generation Venue.
The Sonet diesel-manual is priced from Rs. 9.80 lakh to Rs. 12.79 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Hyundai Creta continues to be a popular choice among diesel SUV buyers. Its 1.5L diesel-manual variants offer a claimed mileage of 21.80kmpl.
The Creta competes with the Seltos, Sierra and Curvv, and remains a strong all-rounder in the segment. The diesel-manual variants of the Creta are priced from Rs. 12.40 lakh to Rs. 18.95 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Kia Carens MPV offers a practical 3-row layout combined with decent mileage. Its single diesel-manual variant delivers a claimed mileage of 21.30kmpl. Priced at Rs. 12.77 lakh (ex-showroom), the Carens remains a compelling option for larger families looking for a balance between space and fuel economy.
The newly introduced Tata Sierra enters the list with a claimed mileage of 21.26kmpl. Positioned as a more premium SUV, it combines modern features with Tata’s familiar diesel powertrain. Its efficiency figure places it just below the Carens in this list. The Sierra diesel-manual variants are priced from Rs. 12.99 lakh to Rs. 20.29 lakh (ex-showroom).
Now in its second generation, the Hyundai Venue offers a claimed mileage of 20.99kmpl with its diesel-manual variants. While it shares its engine with several Hyundai and Kia models, its compact size helps maintain competitive efficiency. It remains one of the most accessible diesel SUVs in India, with prices for the diesel-manual variants ranging from Rs. 9.80 lakh to Rs. 12.79 lakh (ex-showroom).

Its boxy design and feature-rich cabin set it apart, although its efficiency is slightly lower than the Venue and Sonet. Prices for the Syros diesel-manual variants range from Rs. 10.14 lakh to Rs. 12.80 lakh (ex-showroom).
The second-generation Kia Seltos continues to offer a strong diesel engine option with a claimed mileage of 20.70kmpl. It is powered by the same 1.5L diesel engine as the other Hyundai and Kia models on this list. Prices for the Seltos diesel-manual variants range from Rs. 12.59 lakh to Rs. 18.29 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Mahindra XUV 3XO offers a claimed mileage of 20.60kmpl. It stands out for offering the highest torque among the cars on this list. It competes with the Nexon, Venue and Sonet, and remains a strong performer in the segment. The XUV 3XO’s diesel-manual variants are priced from Rs. 9 lakh to Rs. 13.60 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Kia Carens Clavis is the least efficient diesel-manual offering on this list, with a claimed mileage of 19.54kmpl. However, it compensates with updated features and a refreshed design, making it a more premium alternative to the standard Carens. The diesel-manual variants of the Carens Clavis are priced from Rs. 13.01 lakh to Rs. 18.79 lakh (ex-showroom).
