German luxury automaker BMW has added a range topping i3s performance variant to the i3 lineup along with updating the electric hatchback with more cosmetic and performance enhancement. Both the new i3 and i3s will make their public debut at the upcoming Frankfurt Auto Show.
While the BMW i3 continues to offer the same electric motor producing 170bhp of maximum power and 250Nm of peak torque and reaching the sprint of 0-100kmph in just 7.3 seconds with a top speed of 150 kmph and the lithium-ion battery providing a range of 300 kilometres, on the other hand, the BMW i3S will offer the same engine with improved power and performance of 184bhp and 269.8Nm of maximum torque. The car has the capacity to reach 0-100kmph in 6.8 seconds with a top speed of 160kmph and dropping the range to 280 kilometres. Also, there’s a 40 per cent improvement over the i3 with special bearing, better motor speed range and higher rpm. It also comes with a Sport mode.
Apart from these, both the BMW i3 and i3s come with a range extender petrol engine as an option too. The two-cylinder engine producing 38bhp acts as a generator to charge the batteries extending the EVs overall range in everyday use by 150 kilometres. The automaker has also added a new standard charging cable to the i3’s package, the iWallbox that can supply 11 kW of power to charge the high-voltage battery allowing a range of 180 kilometres in just three hours.
Talking about the design, styling and cosmetic updates, the upcoming BMW i3 gets A-pillar and roofline finished in black and also offers two new body colors to choose from Melbourne Red metallic and Imperial Blue metallic along with a new exclusive cloth-leather trim combination of Giga Brown Natural Leather and Carum Spice Grey Cloth. The other highlights include additional chrome inserts around the reworked front bumper and all-LED headlights as standard from now. However, the rear gets only slight tweaks, including a matte black feature line. Talking about the i3S, the car looks quite aggressive with the front bumper getting a contrasting black finish, sport suspension reducing the ride height, 20-inch wheels in bicolor double-spoke design and track increased by 40mm.
Moving towards the interior, both the BMW i3 and i3S get exotic and eco-friendly interior. All the three Loft, Lodge and Suite interior trims are well retained along with the standard Atelier trim. The cars gets an enhanced 10.25-inch iDrive infotainment system that now comes with a Professional navigation system, better voice recognition, and Apple CarPlay as well as offering an expanded list of BMW i ConnectedDrive apps. According to the manufacturer, 80 percent of the i3’s visible surfaces are made from recycled materials or renewable resources.
Both the i3 variants will come loaded with a number of advanced safety and technical features as well. These include Active Driving Assistant, Active Cruise Control, Stop/Go, Advanced Real-Time Traffic Information, ConnectedDrive Services, Daytime Pedestrian Protection, Frontal Collision Warning, City Collision Mitigation, Park Distance Control and the Apple CarPlay. All these features will be used through BMW’s latest iDrive 6 interface.
Although, the manufacturer has revealed all the details about these premium electric cars but BMW has not yet revealed anything regarding the pricing of either of the two.
