The Toyota Prius is one of the best-selling hybrid sedans in the world and it also went on sale in India for a brief period. Toyota have now revealed the 5th-gen Prius with a sharper design, more technology and better efficiency. Let’s take a look at the 5th-gen Prius’ exterior and interior design, features and powertrain specifications.

The 2023 Prius comes with a sharper, more futuristic design than its predecessors. The front of the new Prius features C-shaped LED headlights and an aerodynamic windscreen that almost blends in with the tapering bonnet, lending it a shark-like fascia. Around the side, the new Prius comes with 19-inch machined alloy wheels and gloss black wheel arch cladding. At the rear, the Prius gets a connected LED tail light design along with inverted side creases and an integrated boot lip spoiler.

The new Prius comes with Toyota’s latest tech and interior design. The centre of the dashboard is dominated by a 12.3-inch freestanding touchscreen infotainment system, below which sits the AC vents. Toyota have ditched the centrally-mounted instrument cluster for an all-digital, 7-inch instrument display. While the carmaker is yet to reveal the functions of the infotainment system, we expect it to feature wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The pictures of the Toyota Prius’ cabin also reveal a generous use of soft touch materials on the dashboard.
The new Prius comes with a 5th-gen strong hybrid powertrain from Toyota. It also gets the option of a 2.0L plug-in hybrid powertrain. The strong hybrid powertrain comes with either a 1.8L petrol or a 2.0L petrol engine, mated with an electric motor. The 1.8L hybrid offers 140PS of power whereas the 2.0L hybrid offers 193PS of power. Both the 1.8L hybrid and 2.0L hybrid are available with 2- and 4-wheel-drive options. The plug-in-hybrid powertrain comes with a 2.0L petrol engine along with a bigger Li-ion battery pack. It produces 223 PS of power and is capable of achieving 0-100kmph in just 6.7 seconds.

The new Prius strong hybrid will go on sale globally in the coming weeks whereas the plug-in hybrid variants will launch in March 2023. We do not expect Toyota to launch the Prius in India. However, the Japanese carmaker has received a positive response for the strong hybrid and mild hybrid versions of its C-segment SUV, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Toyota plan to expand its strong hybrid lineup in India with the launch of the Innova Hycross family mover next year.
