5-door Mahindra Thar Launch Likely In 2023 | V3Cars

Mahindra launched the new Thar in October 2020 and since the launch, the SUV has been the talk of the town with bookings crossing 55,000 units. While it is going well for the Mahindra Thar there is one thing that has been demanded by the customers since its debut, a 5-door version. Mahindra has now confirmed that the 5-door Thar is already in development and it is likely to go on sale in 2023.

The 5-door Thar will be a more practical version of the Thar with more space in the second row and additional boot space making it a better family SUV than the 3-door version. While the 3-door Thar also offers two front-facing seats in the second row but they offer limited room.

The 5-door Thar will not only be longer with a longer wheelbase but it might be wider as well in order to receive better proportion. However, the increased length and wheelbase will adversely affect the SUV’s off-roading credentials as it will reduce the 5-door Thar’s break-over angle compared to the 3-door version.

Under the hood, the 5-door Thar is likely to be offered with the same 2.0-litre turbo petrol (150PS/320Nm) and 2.2-litre diesel (130PS/300Nm) engines as the standard model. Both the engines are expected to be offered with 6-speed MT and 6-speed automatic transmissions along with both 2WD and 4WD configurations.

Features on offer should include tilt-adjustable steering, cruise control, height-adjustable driver’s seat, electrically controlled manual AC, tyre pressure monitoring system, rear parking sensors, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual front airbags, electronic stability program, hill launch assist and hill descent control. Mahindra might offer some additional features on the 5-door Thar including auto AC with rear AC vents.

While the 3-door Thar has no direct rivals in India, the 5-door Thar will take on the upcoming 5-door Maruti Jimny and the 5-door version of the upcoming Force Gurkha. The 5-door Thar could also be seen as a much more affordable alternative to the Jeep Wrangler which starts at Rs 53.9 lakh.
