The upcoming Audi Q8 has been creating a buzz in the market for quite some time now. New reports suggest that the SUV might make 680 hp from a hybrid powertrain. If these reports are to be believed, the Q8 will share its twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine and electric motor with the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid.
Talking about the performance, in the Porsche, the twin-scroll turbo V8 makes 550 hp of maximum power & 770 Nm of peak torque. However, it is expected that the electric motor in the Audi will make 136 hp and 400 Nm of torque, bringing the total power to a massive 686 hp. Power is expected to be sent to all the four wheels through an 8-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission. Hence, the Audi RS Q8 SUV is likely to make about 69 hp more power and 290 Nm more torque than the Audi R8 V10 Plus.
However, the R8 will still probably be faster based on the weight difference while on the other hand, is said to have a dedicated sports mode and a fully-electric mode. Also, in pure electric mode, the RS Q8 is expected to have a respectable range of 43 kms. The car will be able to do 0-100 kmph in less than 4 seconds when it is switched to the Sports Mode and both the internal combustion engine and the electric motor work in conjunction. However, the 585 hp GLE 63 and rivaling 575 hp BMW X6 M both take 4.2 seconds to hit the ton mark, while the Range Rover Sport SVR takes 4.3 seconds.
In terms of design, we can expect something very close to the Q8 Sport concept including a large trapezoidal grille given with larger front air intakes. We can also expect more aggressive creases and side sill extensions to visually lower the vehicle on the body of the upcoming RS Q8. According to the spy shots, Audi Sport's trademark cue, the massive oval-shaped exhaust tips can also be seen at the rear.
In terms of features, the standard Q8 already gets height-adjustable, sports-tuned adaptive air suspension and a proper centre differential-based and torque-vectoring Quattro four-wheel drive, however, there is nothing known in terms of features about the upcoming RS Q8. Also, when launched the flagship SUV by Audi will probably also out power the 650hp Lamborghini Urus and 550hp Porsche Cayenne Turbo. Also, the Audi will be the only one which is backed up by an electric motor as well among the competition.
The standard Q8 by Audi takes against the likes of the other mid-size "coupe" SUVs like the BMW X6, Land Rover Range Rover Sport, and Mercedes-Benz GLE, while the RS Q8 will rival the X6 M, Range Rover Sport SVR, and Mercedes-AMG GLE63 in the segment. Though, there is no official confirmation regarding the RS Q8 launch as well as the confirmed powertrain specifications to be offered with the vehicle, it is expected to debut sometime in mid-2019 for the 2020 model year.
