German luxury automaker BMW has started the first pre-production examples of the upcoming X7 full-size luxury SUV at their automaker’s Spartanburg plant. Expected to hit the market by early 2019, the Bavarian car maker is now putting the X7 through its final stages of development.
Speaking about theX7 SUV, Knudt Flor, head of the BMW Group Spartanburg plant said, “This is a very special vehicle and our employees are looking forward to yet a further member of the X family. Together with the BMW X7, a total of five BMW X models will be exported from Spartanburg to all four corners of the globe.”
Based on the X7 iPerformance concept showcased at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, the X7 is expected to join other SUVs under BMW’s X range like the X1, X3, X5 and the X6 in India. Taking the hints from the BMW’s official release featuring the X7’s pre-production, we feel that the kits for the X3 and the X5 models, which are assembled at the BMW’s manufacturing facility in Chennai, come from the same plant where the pre-production models of the X7 are being manufactured. However, the kits for the X1 come from Germany, while the X6 is imported as CBU.
Also, the pre-production examples of the BMW X7 will be used for homologation and registration along with for endurance tests in extreme weather conditions. In order to help the automaker to optimize the future series production of the X7, this production of the pre- production models also serves as a test for the BMW’s Spartanburg plant.
To keep the things interesting till revelation, BMW has kept the flagship SUV fully camouflaged with a striped-pattern wrap. However, BMW has also released few images of the X7 sitting on the assembly line and showing off details of the front end which is dominated by the huge kidney grille and some sleek LED headlights and wraparound LED tail lamps. The SUV also remains true to the all-glass roof of the concept making way for a comprehensive one.
In terms of powertrain, like the looks, BMW has kept every detail under the wraps for the upcoming X7. However, we can expect it to come powered by the same engine that works for the BMW’s flagship 7 Series sedan. One thing to notice here is that BMW had showcased the X7 iPerformance concept as a plug-in hybrid, hence, we can expect the BMW X7 SUV to offer the hybrid powertrain option from the 740e xDrive iPerformance. This includes a 2.0-litre, inline 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine mated to an electric motor producing 317.59 bhp of cumulative power. Also, the X7 plug-in hybrid will be among the 25 electrified models that BMW plans to launch by 2025.
According to the manufacturer, it is planning to reveal the production-spec model of the X7 in nearly 12 months from now indicating the showcase to happen at the 2019 Detroit Motor Show that usually takes place in January every year. The India launch of the SUV can be expected nearly after a year of it going on sale in the international markets. When launched the BMW X7 SUV will take against the likes of Range Rover and the Mercedes-Benz GLS. Stay tuned to V3cars.com for further updates on the upcoming BMW X7.
