Italian auto major, Fiat has resumed working on the replacement model for its Freemont that is available for sale in the global markets. As per the reports, the successor of the Fiat Freemont will be based on the Jeep Compass’ platform. As per the sources, Fiat originally had planned to globally debut the new SUV model nearly a year back. However, the project was kept on hold, as the Italian auto maker shifted its focus to other important projects such as the new Argo hatchback and the soon to be introduced X6S sedan among others.

Now, the project of the new Fiat SUV and Freemont replacer is back on the anvil and the automaker is busy working on it full swing. The new upcoming Fiat SUV is expected to be similar to the Toro pickup truck when design is concerned. The upcoming SUV shares not only the platform with the Jeep Compass SUV, but also various other components including the doors.

When the under the hood mechanical bits are concerned, although nothing has been confirmed as yet, the new Fiat SUV is expected to get powered by the 1.8 litre ethanol/petrol motor that has the ability to generate a peak power output of 138 hp, and a 2.0 litre Multijet turbo diesel engine that has the capability to churn out a max power output of 170 hp. Both of these engines also do the duty under the hood of the Toro pickup. The smaller 1.8L engine is coupled with a six speed automatic transmission gearbox that transmits the generated power to the vehicle’s front wheels, while the larger 2.0L diesel motor gets paired with a 6 speed manual transmission and a 9 speed automatic transmission gearbox option. This engine also offers both the options of a front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive system.

When features are concerned, the new upcoming Compass based SUV from the house of Fiat is likely to come equipped with Fiat’s 5 inch Uconnect infotainment system and a 7 inch MID dominating the instrument cluster. The SUV is also expected to be endowed with features such as reverse camera along with reverse parking sensors, an extensive package of 7 airbags and a panoramic sunroof among much more.

This new upcoming Fiat SUV in works will be first launched in the car market of South America, followed which it is also likely to make way in various other global markets.

When the Indian car market is concerned, it is still too early to comment on whether or not this Fiat SUV will come to our shores. Although the South American is similar to the Indian car market, and the Indian SUV market is highly profitable, Fiat might take some time to consider bringing this SUV to India. This is because although Fiat is an internationally renowned brand, it is not that popular in India. Fiat India is currently focusing on properly establishing the Jeep brand in India. While the Compass has already generated good response in India, Jeep India is planning to launch the Renegade sometime next year.
