Scoop: Kia Clavis EV To Get Larger Battery Pack Than Creta Electric But Similar Real-World Range | V3Cars

According to a source, the upcoming mass-market electric car from Kia, the Carens Clavis EV will get a slightly larger battery pack than the Hyundai Creta Electric. The larger battery pack will help them get better range on the ARAI test. However, the real-world range will be similar to that of the Creta Electric.

Our understanding of the industry and development process also aligns with this scoop. First of all, the Carens has a longer wheelbase, which allows them to cram in a larger battery pack. Secondly, unlike a 2-row C-segment SUV like Creta, an MPV is expected to be typically carrying 4 occupants and frequently utilise the 3rd row seats as well.

With a full load of 7 occupants, which is a fairly common use case among MPV owners, the real world range will drop drastically. To avoid any backlash from significant fluctuations based on the load, Kia will most likely claim only a slightly better range than the Creta Electric despite a ‘considerably’ larger battery pack. Thus, when driving with just one or two occupants, you can expect more than the claimed range. We expect it to breach the psychological barrier of 500km in claimed range.

Kia clavis ev larger battery than creta ev

The introduction of the Clavis EV will make it the most affordable 3-row electric car. The next most affordable option in this space is the BYD E Max 7.

While we can’t confirm the exact battery capacity of the Clavis EV, we expect it to offer around 55-60kWh of battery capacity to compensate for the probability of hauling heavier loads than the Creta EV. Moreover, the larger battery pack will also bring it in the leagues of its rivals, which have larger battery capacities. For instance, the Curvv EV has 55kWh, Windsor has 53kWh, BE6 base model has 59kWh and the EVitara has 61.1kWh in top model. The NMC chemistry of the Carens Clavis EV should help it get longer range despite lower battery capacity even if they choose to offer only a 55kWh pack.
