by Mahesh Yadav on Thursday, Jan 09 2020

Kia’s upcoming sub-4m SUV, codenamed QYI, is set to be showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo in its concept form. The confirmation comes from the brand’s head of sales and marketing, Manohar Bhat, on the sidelines of Kia’s announcement of winners of the second season of Australian Open Ballkids India Programme 2020.

In the 2018 edition of the Auto Expo, Kia showcased its global products alongside the SP2 Concept, which formed the base of the Seltos compact SUV. The SP2’s exterior design was carried over with minor cosmetic changes in the production form. As a result, we expect the concept version of the QYI to reveal a lot about the upcoming Hyundai Venue and Maruti Vitara Brezza rival.

The QYI is slated to be launched in India in the second half of 2020. It will be the third Kia car in India after the Seltos and the Carnival. The Carnival is set to join Kia’s fleet in February with its launch is slated at the Auto Expo. It will be a premium MPV, larger and more expensive than the Toyota Innova Crysta.

As far as QYI is concerned, expect it to share its platform and powertrains with the Hyundai Venue. The Venue is currently available with two petrol engines: a 1.0-litre turbocharged unit and a 1.2-litre unit. The turbo-petrol engine is available with both manual and automatic transmission options. There’s also a 1.4-litre diesel engine on offer, available with a manual transmission only. The Venue’s engines are yet to be upgraded to meet BS6 emission norms. Apart from the Venue and the Vitara Brezza, the QYI will also lock horns with the 2020 Tata Nexon (facelift), Mahindra XUV300 and Ford EcoSport.
