Maruti Suzuki is working on bringing the updated Baleno premium hatchback in the Indian market. The upcoming vehicle has been spotted testing for the first time in the country. The test mule was spied without any camouflage revealing the front of the updated Baleno.
According to the spied image, the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Baleno gets a redesigned front bumper with a large air dam in the centre and separate vents on either side. Also, the front grille looks wider and slimmer than the outgoing model. The grille incorporates a chrome strip on the lower side as well as the headlamp clusters have chrome inserts and house projectors. However, currently Maruti offers projector headlamps on the Alpha trim only and reports suggest that this feature is likely to be offered on the lower variants as well. Though the exterior is likely to get some additional features, the car will not be offered with any design changes. The updated model will be based on the existing lightweight HEARTECT platform.
Since this is the first time that the next- gen Baleno has been spotted testing in the country, there are no spy images or information about the changes inside the hatchback. However, the cabin is likely to receive some advanced features such as new seat upholstery, updated touchscreen infotainment system and an updated instrument cluster among others. Also, the 2019 Maruti Baleno facelift will receive dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist, speed sensing auto door lock, speed alert system and rear parking sensors as standard.
Mechanically, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno facelift will be powered by the existing set of petrol and diesel engines. The 1.2- litre naturally aspirated petrol engine is capable of producing 83 bhp of power and 115 Nm of torque. The transmission options include a 5- speed manual and a CVT automatic. On the other side, the 1.3- litre DDiS diesel engine churns out 74 bhp of maximum power and 190 NM of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a 5- speed manual gearbox. However, this diesel engine will be discontinued as it won't receive an upgrade to meet the upcoming BSVI emission norms.
The existing Baleno is available in four variants, Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha and the updated version will also be available in the same trims. The prices for the current gen hatchback start from Rs 5.38 lakh and goes up to Rs 8.49 lakh (ex- showroom Delhi). In terms of features, the Maruti Baleno gets a 7- inch touchscreen infotainment system with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as the Suzuki Connect package to keep track of various telematics of your Baleno via an app on your smartphone. It also gets automatic climate control, passive keyless entry system with push- button start and auto projector headlamps with LED DRLs. For safety, the Baleno offers dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and ISOFIX child seat anchors as standard across the range. It also gets reverse parking sensors and a rearview camera as well in the higher trims. When launched, the next- gen Maruti Baleno will continue to take against the likes of the Hyundai Elite i20, Volkswagen Polo, Ford Freestyle and the Honda Jazz.
