Mahindra have launched the latest iteration of their 3-door SUV Thar with the name ‘Thar OG’. The updated SUV gets a comprehensive set of mechanical, cosmetic, and convenience feature updates. Here we bring you a list of top 7 features of the new Thar OG and how they could affect your buying decision.

The new Thar OG boasts a long list of changes while retaining the same starting price of Rs. 10.32 lakh (ex-showroom). This introductory price is valid for deliveries until November 30, 2026. Top features of the update are:
1. New Platform

The biggest change in the new iteration of the Thar OG is the platform underpinning it. Mahindra have given the Thar a new M_Glyde 4G body-on-frame platform, related to the M_Glyde platform used in its elder sibling, the Thar Roxx.
While we are yet to test it ourselves, Mahindra claim this new platform is lighter and stiffer than before. They have also added a Watts link to the rear suspension, which they say improves cornering stability and control.
The top ZXT Thar OG model also gets frequency-dependent dampers. Mahindra claim it is the first body-on-frame vehicle to feature them. They respond differently to slow body movements and quick bumps, aiming to improve ride comfort while maintaining control.
Overall, these changes should provide more confidence around the corners as well as better comfort in the Thar.
2. More Powerful Engines

The 1.5L diesel engine continues to produce 119PS of power and 300Nm of torque. However the 2.0L turbo petrol and 2.2L diesel engines have seen a bump in these figures.
3. Electronic Power Steering

The Thar finally gets electric power steering with the ‘OG’ update, replacing the former hydraulic setup. Mahindra say it takes less effort to turn, which should help in tight traffic and on narrow off-road trails. They also claim improved steering precision and return to centre after a turn.
4. More Off-Road Capability

The LXT 4WD and new ZXT 4WD variants now get a rear electronic locking differential as well as terrain modes. The locking differential can help the SUV maintain traction if a rear wheel slips off-road. These variants also get 3 terrain modes – Mud, Sand and Snow. Together, these additions should make the Thar OG easier to drive over challenging terrain.
5. Better Safety Suite

The Thar OG now gets 6 airbags and all-4 disc brakes in the top ZXT variant. Other safety features include:
The Thar OG also gets an updated electronic stability program (ESP) suite designed to improve its stability and traction on and off the road.
6. All LED Lighting Setup

The Thar OG now gets LED taillights across the range. The top ZXT variant also gets LED headlamps with C-shaped LED DRLs and ice-cube LED fog lamps with a cornering function. The AXT and LXT variants retain halogen headlamps.
7. Cosmetic Updates

The Thar OG gets a redesigned set of front and rear bumpers. The SUV also boasts a new front grille with an off-center ‘Thar’ badge. Mahindra have widened its track, which gives the Thar OG a broader stance; the company claims this also improves stability. The top ZXT model also gets bigger, 19-inch alloy wheels which add to the looks.
The changes are mostly mechanical and could improve the Thar OG’s ride and handling. The new chassis, suspension and steering are intended to improve stability and comfort on highways, while the updated ESP suite is designed to help maintain traction. The rear differential lock and terrain modes could make off-road driving easier on the 4WD variants. The added safety features should also provide more peace of mind. We will have to drive the Thar OG to see how much of a difference these changes make.
