After the launch of the more affordable Thar 2WD, Mahindra are all set to launch new base variants of the Thar rugged SUV. A leaked homologation document reveals the details of the upcoming Thar variants.

Mahindra Thar To Get New Base Variants

As per the document, Mahindra may soon relaunch the AX soft top variants of the Thar 4WD. The Thar AX 4WD soft top is likely to be offered with both petrol and diesel engine options. Currently, the base AX(O) variant of the Thar doesn’t offer a soft top. Buyers get the option to choose either a hard top or a convertible top depending on the powertrain.

It is worth mentioning that at the launch of the Thar, Mahindra offered the AX soft top variants with side facing rear seats. However, to secure a better Global NCAP safety rating, Mahindra discontinued the AX variants of the Thar. The new AX soft top variants will offer a 4-seater configuration with captain chairs for the 2nd row.

The new AX 4WD variants are likely to sit below the AX (O) variants and undercut them by a considerable margin. However, since the homologation document only lists the 2.2L turbo diesel engine with the AX variant, we do not expect it to be cheaper than the Thar 2WD AX (O), which comes equipped with a smaller 1.5L turbo diesel.

Mahindra Thar CNG In The Works?

Interestingly, the homologation document also lists the “Thar AX B P MT 4WD” variant. If we assume that P stands for petrol and D stands for diesel, B here could stand for Bi-fuel, which is used for CNG vehicles. While we do not think that Mahindra will launch a Thar CNG anytime soon, the homologation document opens up another possibility for the new Thar.
