Speaking at the launch,  Veejay Ram Nakra, Chief of Sales & Marketing - Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra, said, "Since its launch in 2011, the XUV500 has been a pioneer in providing innovative hi-tech features that are not available even in vehicles that are almost double its price. We are certain that the introduction of these hi-end features at such a competitive price point will generate a lot of interest amongst prospects who are evaluating SUVs in the price range of Rs 14 lakh to Rs 18 lakh. By introducing these aspirational features at this price, XUV500 has raised the bar once again."

Powered by a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine, the Mahindra XUV500 W9 has been offered with both manual and automatic transmission options. The 2179 cc engine churns out about 140 bhp and develops a peak torque of 330 Nm while the transmission duties are carried by a 6-speed manual gearbox and an Aisin-sourced 6-speed automatic torque converter. Also, according to the reports, Mahindra is working on a facelift for the XUV500, which is expected to be launched later this year with a tuned engine producing about 170 bhp.

In terms of features, while there are no cosmetic changes, the new Mahindra XUV500 W9 comes with a number of additional features as compared to the W8 variant. An electric sunroof, reverse camera with dynamic assist, and Mahindra's Ecosense Technology along with the standard 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and other connectivity options like - Bluetooth, audio, hands-free call, and iPod connectivity are the additional features offered with the newly launched Mahindra XUV500 W9. Apart from these, other features include passive keyless entry and push-button start-stop function with safety features like an emergency call function, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP with Rollover Mitigation and many more.

However, as compared to the top-spec W10 variant, this new variant does not offer the optional all-wheel drive. It also misses out on features like logo projection lamps under ORVM, Connected Apps and brake energy regeneration. Also, the manual transmission W9 costs about Rs 1.2 lakh less than the top-spec W10 manual with rear-wheel-drive, while the W10 AT is about Rs 1.14 lakh less than the W9 AT. Apart from working on an updated engine For XUV500, Mahindra is also preparing to launch a refreshed Scorpio in the country. The Mahindra XUV500 W9 is said to rival the newly launched Jeep Compass in the country while the other competitors are Hyundai Creta and Tata Hexa.
