MG Motor India have confirmed their small urban electric car, the Air EV, will go on sale in early 2023. When launched, the MG Motor Air EV could become one of the most affordable EVs in India. MG’s Chinese sibling, Wuling, already offer the Air EV in Indonesia.

The Wuling Air EV features compact dimensions and a quirky exterior design. In fact, the Air EV is smaller than the Tata Nano and has a wheelbase of 2010mm. Despite its compact dimensions, the Air EV features a 2-door layout and seating for up to 4 passengers.

Take a look at the dimensions of the MG Air EV against the Tata Nao:
In terms of features, the Air EV offers twin 10.25-inch connected screens, climate control, keyless entry with push-button start/stop, electric parking brake, power-adjustable ORVMs, steering mounted controls, rear parking sensors, dual airbags, LED headlights and LED tail lights.

Wuling offer the Air EV with 2 battery pack options — 17.3kWh and 26.7kWh. The 17.3kWh battery pack offers a claimed range of up to 200km on a single charge, while the 26.7kWh battery pack offers a range of 300km. Both variants come with a 40PS electric motor. We are yet to learn whether MG will offer one of the 2 mentioned battery packs or offer a new battery pack for our market.

While we expect the MG Air EV to be one of the most-affordable EVs on sale, it may not come cheap. We expect MG Motor India to position the Air EV as a premium urban electric personal mobility solution for crowded cities. Given the equipment and range it is likely to offer, we expect the AIr EV to be priced around Rs. 10 lakh, which would put it up against the Tata Tiago EV.
