Mercedes-Benz has introduced the new generation GLS, which is the German luxury auto major’s flagship and largest SUV model. The Mercedes-Benz GLS has been endowed with a new design language, which makes it at par with the new generation Merc SUVs. The new GLS flaunts a sleeker and smoother flowing styling replacing its sharp features and creases. Nevertheless, it still retains the upright and aggressive SUV stance of its predecessor.
The new-gen Mercedes GLS is not only sleek, but aerodynamic as well. As per the company, the styling and aerodynamic enhancements have decreased the drag coefficient of the new GLS to 0.32Cd and will help in wind noise reduction at high speeds.
The all new GLS is based on Mercedes' Modular High Architecture platform similar to its smaller sibling GLE. The usage of this new platform has also made the SUV larger in dimensions. The SUV is now 5,207 mm long, 1,956 mm wide and comes with a longer wheelbase measuring 3,135 mm.
The new GLS also gets completely overhauled interiors and boasts of the new 12.3 inch screen integrated MBUX infotainment system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, and a newly styled steering wheel with touchpads. All the seats are power adjustable, and two 11.6 inch infotainment touchscreens are also there to keep the rear passangers entertained.
Under the hood, the all new Mercedes-Benz GLS SUV offers a range of petrol and diesel engine choices. Internationally, there will be two 48V mild-hybrid petrol mills. The top-end GLS 580 4Matic will get a 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 with hybrid assistance offering around 491 Bhp along with 700 Nm of torque. The GLS 450 4MATIC will pack in a 3.0L 6-cylinder turbocharged mill with hybrid assistance that will offer around 370 Bhp and 500 Nm. Both the petrol engines will offer more power and torque features through EQ Boost for short periods.
On the other hand, there will be a 2.9L 6-cylinder turbocharged OM 656 diesel engine that will offer around 334 bhp and 700 Nm in the GLS 400d 4Matic and 289 bhp and 600 Nm in the GLS 350d 4Matic.
All the offered engines will get mated to a 9 speed torque converter automatic transmission gearbox along with Mercedes’ 4Matic AWD system. The GLS will also get the company’s new Active Stop-and-Go Assist feature that will help maintain the lane keeping and safety distance of the vehicle for up to speeds of 60 kph.
The ultra-luxurious Maybach version of the all new GLS SUV will also join the lineup soon that will lock its horns with the likes of Bentley Bentayga. There will also obviously be the performance oriented AMG versions of the new-gen GLS that will join the flagship SUV’s lineup in 2020.
There are yet no words about the all new GLS’s arrival to the Indian market. However, we hope that it will soon come to our market following the model’s international launch.
