The updated Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is scheduled to be launched in the Indian market on 23rd January 2019. The hatchback has already been spied a number of times testing in the country and the brochure of the car also got leaked few days ago. Now, the automaker has teased the 2019 Wagon R with the first official image ahead of launch and quoting the model as the “Big New WagonR”. With the vertically placed tail- lamps frame the rear window with a rear wiper and turn indicators integrated with the wing mirrors makes it clear that the teased variant is the top- spec Wagon R ZXi variant.
According to the teased images, the new Maruti Wagon R 2019 features tail- lamps inspired by Volvo along with a floating roof, C- pillar with black plastic and bold flowing side creases and the model continues to carry the signature tall boy stance. The leaked brochure also reveals that the new Maruti Wagon R will feature a rectangular grille with a chrome strip, larger headlamps, revised bumper, a flatter bonnet and fog lamps with noticeable casing at the front end. Other updates will include vertical X-mas tree tail- lamps, new rear bumper and license plate with chrome insert. In terms of dimension, the next – gen model is 56 mm longer, 130 mm wider and 25 mm shorter compared to the outgoing version. Also, the car will be up to 65 kg lighter weighing around 805 kg for the base model.
Though Maruti Suzuki has only teased the Wagon R from outside but recently, the AMT version of the 2019 Wagon R has been spotted in the country. The spied images reveal the interior of the upcoming Wagon R. The car shows fog lamps at the front along with chrome garnish at the front grille and with body colored rear view mirrors having integrated turning blinkers. Talking about the spied interior, the 2019 Wagon R AMT will come with dual tone white and black interiors with new and sporty steering wheel. It also gets mounted buttons to enhance the convenience of the driver. The touchscreen infotainment system supporting both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay can also be seen in the spied images.
According to the brochure, the interior of the top- spec variant will get Maruti’s SmartPlay 7.0- inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, while the mid- spec VXi will get a standard 2- DIN audio system with Bluetooth connectivity. The Japanese car maker has also made a number of equipments standard in order to meet the upcoming crash test norms. The features include ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, a seatbelt reminder for the driver and front passenger, driver- side airbag and a speed alert system. However, the passenger side airbag will be an optional extra on the LXi and VXi trims, while the top- spec ZXi will get dual front airbags as standard, along with seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters.
In terms of powertrain, the next- gen Wagon R gets the same 68 hp, 1.0- litre, three- cylinder engine (K10B) as the existing model, and will also be additionally offered with a new 83 hp, 1.2- litre, four- cylinder engine (K12M) borrowed from Maruti Suzuki’s bigger hatchbacks such as the Swift and Ignis. Both engines get 5- speed manual and automated manual transmission options, while a CNG option will also be on offer only on the K10B motor. The brochure reveals that the 2019 Wagon R will be offered in seven variants- LXi, VXi, VXi AGS, ZXi and ZXi AGS. A top- spec ZXi variant will replace the current top- spec VXi+ trim. The smaller motor will be available only in the lower- spec LXi and VXi trims, while the larger engine will be available with the mid-spec VXi and top- spec ZXi variants. The AMT will be offered with both engines, but only above the VXi trim.
The upcoming Wagon R will come with the option of six exterior color options– white, silver, grey, orange, brown and blue. The existing Wagon R sells from Rs 4.15 lakh to Rs 5.39 lakh (ex- showroom, Delhi) and is likely to be priced starting at Rs 4.5 lakh and going up to Rs 6.5 lakh (ex- showroom). When launched, the next- gen Maruti Suzuki Wagon R will continue to take against the likes of the Tata Tiago, Renault Kwid and Hyundai Santro in the segment.
