Volkswagen ID.4 India Launch Confirmed For 2023 | V3Cars

At the launch of the Volkswagen Virtus, Volkswagen India confirmed the launch of the ID.4 electric crossover. The ID.4 electric crossover is likely to hit our shores in 2023. Volkswagen showcased the ID.4 earlier at the 2020 Auto Expo and it garnered a good interest at the biennial event.

Volkswagen ID.4 Electric

The Volkswagen ID.4 electric crossover sits on VW’s MEB platform, which also underpins other vehicles like the Skoda Enyaq iV and Audi Q4 e-tron in the group. This electric-car platform is modular and can accommodate a wide range of vehicle sizes and model types. It can suit a sedan, hatchback or SUV with long or short wheelbases. On the drivetrain front, it allows front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive with on-demand torque split between front and rear axles. We are likely to get the dual-motor version of the ID.4 with 4-wheel drive as it can better challenge the recently-launched Kia EV6 and the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5.

The ID.4 with the 4-wheel-drive pro spec comes with a 77kWh battery pack. Its twin electric motors offer a power output of 265PS and a WLTP-certified range of 517km on a single charge. The ID.4 can do 0-100kmph in 6.9 seconds whereas its top speed is 180kmph. Volkswagen also offer rear-wheel-drive variants of the ID.4 but we do not expect Volkswagen to bring them to India.

The ID.4 has a wheelbase of 2766mm. Speaking of other dimensions, the ID.4 is 4584mm long, 1852mm wide and 1612mm tall. Just for reference, the ID.4 is longer and wider than the Volkswagen Tiguan while also offering a considerably longer wheelbase.

We expect Volkswagen to import the ID.4 for sale in India with modest sales targets. The ID.4 is likely to cost Rs. 60 - 65 lakh (ex-showroom). It is worth noting that the Kia EV6 is also an import, but Hyundai are likely to locally assemble the Ioniq 5 to keep the prices competitive.
