The German automotive manufacturing company Volkswagen is all set to introduce a sportier version of the Ameo in India as per the reports. Well, this isn’t the special-edition Ameo Sport that was spotted testing last year by the company. In that model, the focus was on enhancing the car cosmetically, while this would be a performance-focused car, GT-badged Ameo.
As per the Director of Volkswagen India, Stephen Knapp, the next big thing from the German carmaker in the market could be the Ameo TSI. Volkswagen India is currently working out to launch this car as one of its ‘action models’ for the Indian passenger car market.
The VW Ameo TSI, based on the Polo GT TSI, is expected to be launched later this year. The Ameo TSI is likely to have the same engine and gearbox combination offered by the Polo GT TSI and Vento TSI. The new Ameo TSI is to use the 1.2 liter turbocharged petrol engine four-cylinder engine that churns out 105PS of max power at 5000rpm and 175Nm of peak torque at 1500-4100rpm and is mated to a 7 speed twin clutch DSG automatic gearbox for transmission. The same 1.2-litre TSI motor that is to be placed under the hood of the Ameo GT TSI also powers the Vento TSI. As the Vento TSI is heavy in weight than the Polo GT TSI, the hatchback has an advantage of a better power to weight ratio and for the same reason; we believe that the Ameo GT TSI will be highly exciting to drive than the bigger Vento TSI.
Volkswagen already offers the same 7 speed DSG twin clutch automatic gearbox on the Diesel variant of Ameo. After the introduction of the new turbocharged petrol engine-gearbox version on the Ameo, the car will become India’s most powerful one in the league of the compact sedans. The positioning of the car is likely to be as a sportier alternative to other compact sedans sold in the Indian market.
The Ameo is a car developed specifically for the Indian passenger car market and is the first sub-4 meter sedan coming from the German automotive manufacturer. Once it’ll be launched, the Ameo is going to be the only sub-4-metre compact sedan in India with engines that produces more than 100PS of power in both petrol and diesel variants. The current diesel engine that does duty on the Ameo is also a powerful one as it churns out 110PS of power and 250Nm of torque from its 1.5-litre four-cylinder unit.
Essentially a compact sedan version of the Polo hatchback, the Ameo has strengths like solid build quality, good safety levels with airbags and ABS standard across variants along with a powerful turbo diesel engine and a diesel-automatic option.
VW also has a race-spec Ameo Cup car with 1.8-litre turbocharged TSI petrol engine that powers the Skoda Octavia and Superb. However, in the race car this powertrain churns out a stonking 205PS of power and 320Nm of torque. For now, though, this is a car and engine combination which is not expected to go on sale in India anytime soon.
Apart from Volkswagen, Tata is also planning to introduce an affordable performance compact sedan, the Tigor JTP, which was showcased at Auto Expo 2018. Interesting times are coming for the customers looking to buy a performance car in the sub-Rs 10 lakh bracket.
Also, there are more compact sedans in the Indian market that are now getting both petrol and diesel automatic options. This is why Volkswagen is thinking of equipping the new Ameo with a petrol-DSG combination. The new Swift Dzire already offers petrol and diesel AMT options, and the upcoming Tata Amaze will also offer petrol and diesel CVT options. The market is changing and the companies are all geared up to live up to the expectation of the India car consumers.
